INDIANAPOLIS - The Peacock men's wrestling team (4-5, 2-1 GLVC) got a strong performance from the middle of its lineup in a 22-16 win over No. 25 Indianapolis (2-3, 2-1 GLVC) on Friday night. Tanner Arjes (141), No. 8 Ethen Doty (149), Nick Mueller (165) and Griffin Luke (174) all picked up major decision wins while Preston Klostermann (157) tallied a win by fall.
Doty took on No. 11 Gavin Garcia for the night's lone ranked matchup. After a scoreless first period and a Doty escape in the second, the match was 1-0 entering the third. Late in the period, the Peacock redshirt senior took advantage of Garcia's aggressiveness for a takedown and a four-point nearfall to get the 8-0 major decision.
Klostermann recorded the only win by fall on the night. He got Luke Robards positioned into a stud cradle with one leg up and his shoulders down for the pin 1:45 into the match.
Luke defeated Shane Bates, who is ranked No. 20 in The Open Mat at 174 pounds. Luke recorded a takedown in the first, a reversal in the second and a takedown in the third. He added two more points off a stall and riding time for the 10-0 win.
After a scoreless first period, Mueller gained some momentum after an escape in the second period against UIndy's Mason Day. He recorded three takedowns with two in the third period for the 11-2 victory.
Arjes had the first win for the Peacocks of the night at 141 pounds over Toby Billerman. The redshirt freshman captured two takedowns, a reversal and a four-point nearfall to win, 13-2.
Jackson Heaston (125) and Dawson Schmit (133) faced tough, ranked competition, but both wrestled hard and lost by decision. Heaston fell, 3-0, to No. 12 Nathan Smith, who scored off of an escape and a reversal.
Schmit fell to No. 10 Aidan Sprague in a highly entertaining matchup. Schmit picked up an early reversal, but Sprague escaped to make the score 2-1. A Sprague escape in the second period tied it at 2-2. In the third, Schmit escaped with 37 seconds left, six seconds before Sprague could get a point from riding time. The Peacock took a shot, but Sprague was able to get the takedown, and a late Schmit reversal came up just short, 6-5.
No. 15 Braxten Westendorf had another close match at 184 pounds against Christian Chavez. After they each recorded an escape, Chavez got the sudden victory in overtime with a takedown, 4-1.
At 197, Matthew Marcum fell to Noah Clouser in a 6-3 decision. Hunter Bye lost to No. 11 Cale Gray in the heavyweight match, 11-2.
Reily Dolan (165) ended the night with an extra match against Mason Cantu. The Peacock redshirt senior totaled two takedowns to end the night on a strong note with a 9-4 victory.
Doty, Luke, and Arjes all finished the week 2-0, and each is 3-0 in GLVC action. Arjes won both of this week's matches with bonus point wins after defeating Aiden Colbert of McKendree with a 15-0 tech fall on Thursday.
With the win, UIU moves to 3-0 against UIndy since joining the conference. This is the team's second dual victory against a ranked team this season after defeating No. 25 King (Tenn.) at the NWCA Duals.
The Peacocks have two events next weekend. UIU will have wrestlers at the Loras College Open on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 9 a.m. The Peacocks also return home to continue conference play on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. against Quincy (Ill.) (8-3, 1-1 GLVC).
