Peacocks fall for first time in GLVC play despite Privet’s 20-point performance

All five Upper Iowa starters score double digits in 10-point loss to Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Missouri - The Upper Iowa women's basketball team (7-5, 3-1 GLVC) suffered its first conference loss to Maryville (Mo.) (10-3, 4-1 GLVC) on Friday afternoon, 79-69. Junior guard Ava Privet led the Peacocks with 20 points, her second-most of the season.

The game featured 10 lead changes and 10 ties, but Maryville held control for most of the contest, leading for 27:49. Maryville got a huge push from its bench, outscoring UIU's 42-4. The Peacocks combatted that total by having all five starters score in the double digits.

Upper Iowa led 7-2 early in the first quarter, but the Saints then outscored the Peacocks 18-5 the rest of the period for a 20-12 lead. Privet totaled eight points in the opening quarter, making three of UIU's five field goals.

Trailing 26-18 in the second quarter, Bryar Duwe capped off an 8-0 Peacock run with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 26-26. Ellie Foster later knocked down another trey for a 31-28 lead, but Maryville used an old-fashioned 3-point play and two free throws to lead 33-32 at the break.

UIU outscored Maryville 20-13 in the second quarter, marking the team's best of the game. Seven of the Saints' 13 points came at the charity stripe.

The third quarter was back-and-forth until the 2:30 mark. Leading 50-49, the Saints ended the period on a 7-0 run, during which they held the Peacocks to 0-of-5 from the field.

The Peacocks responded to start the fourth quarter, using an 8-2 run to cut the Maryville lead to 59-57. Maryville calmed down after the media timeout and rebounded with a 7-2 run of its own for the 66-59 advantage. A layup through contact by Adylan Ayer gave the Saints a three-possession advantage with 3:03 left.

Upper Iowa cut the lead down to five with 1:26 left and then again with 43 seconds left. Maryville held firm, making four of its last five field goals and seven of its last 11 free throws to finish with the 10-point win.

Privet added four rebounds and two assists to her 20-point day. She shot 7-of-15 (46.6%) from the field. Freshman Kendyl Lodermeier totaled 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The forward also added a block and an assist.
