FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa men's basketball (13-3, 8-1 GLVC) responded to Thursday's loss with a 91-82 win over Truman State (Mo.) (7-10, 4-5 GLVC) on Saturday. Kyle Hrncir had his ninth double-double of the season and scored his second-most points this year.
Hrncir recorded 30 points and 13 rebounds. He scored 23 of his points in the second half and drew seven fouls in the game. The Farmington native also dished out a team-high five assists and grabbed a steal.
The Peacocks were down 14-12 with 11:33 to go in the first half. Upper Iowa went on a 7-0 run over the next 1:30 to take the 19-14 advantage. Ashton Hermann scored four points during the run.
UIU later extended its lead to 25-18 with 9:34 left in the half. Trey Lewis, Anton Fontin and Cael Reichter each scored two points during the stretch.
Six minutes later, Truman State cut the Peacocks' lead to two after Marquise Carver-Smith hit the 3-pointer with 2:30 remaining. The Peacocks had the upper hand for the rest of the half, taking a 39-35 lead into the break off a driving layup from Lewis and free throws by Fontin. Lewis led the Peacocks with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Upper Iowa used a small 10-4 spurt to take its first double-digit lead of the game with 13:37 to go in the second half. Hrncir scored on four straight possessions, including an and-one, while Zach Erwin capped off the run with a left side tip-in off a missed layup by Hrncir.
The Bulldogs trailed by 10 with 9:23 left. Over the next minute, Truman State made a 3-pointer and a floating jumper to trail by five. Hrncir answered right away at the other end with a dunk to halt the momentum.
Jack Miller scored the next seven of the Peacocks' nine points, and Cael Reichter later hit two free throws to take an 81-70 lead with 4:26 left in the half. Miller scored his seven points off a turnaround jump shot, a layup, and a 3-pointer.
Over the next two minutes, Truman State cut the lead to five as Julian Brown converted an and one opportunity at the end of the run to make the score 84-79. Hrncir scored the Peacocks' last five points of the game to give UIU the 91-82 win. The redshirt junior hit two layups and a free throw.
Lewis had 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Reichter recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The freshman added a game-high three steals and an assist.
Miller posted 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. Fontin had eight points, eight rebounds and a steal. Erwin recorded six points, one assist and one steal.
Brown scored a team-high 19 points for the Bulldogs. Brennan Lovette had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
10 Peacocks played in the game. UIU had an advantage in fastbreak points, 24-6, and 54-36 in the paint. There were a total of 48 fouls in the game, with 26 on TSU and 22 on UIU.
Upper Iowa shot 28-for-63 (44.4%) from the field and 9-for-23 (39.1%) from behind the arc. Truman State went 33-for-72 (45.8%) from the floor and 2-for-14 (13.3%) from three.
UIU heads to Missouri for two contests next week. The Peacocks play William Jewell (Mo.) (10-7, 6-3 GLVC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Rockhurst (12-5, 6-3 GLVC) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
