MANKATO, Minn. - The Upper Iowa volleyball team (0-8) fell in straight sets to No. 22 Northern State (8-0) and Minnesota State (8-0). Sophomore Morgan Block earned All-Tournament Team after totaling 71 digs (5.47 per set) over the tournament.Â
Block totaled 32 digs (5.33 per set) on Saturday. On the attack, Martha Pace led UIU with 20 kills while also totaling 13 digs and five blocks. Kailey Porter added 13 kills and Carley Jonker had 10. Grace Fruzen totaled 30 assists while Jaeden Cook added 29 assists.Â
The Peacocks are back in action next week, traveling to Truman State (Mo.) to compete in the Truman State Tournament. UIU faces GLVC foes William Jewell (Mo.) and Rockhurst (Mo.) in nonconference matchups on Saturday, Sept. 20.Â
No. 22 Northern State 3, Upper Iowa
After the Wolves took the first set 25-19, NSU used that momentum to take an early 9-2 advantage in the second set. The Peacocks battled all the way back to tie the set at 22-22. Northern State used two kills by Linnea Nesheim to get the win, but the Peacocks didn't make it easy, forcing three different set points.Â
With the score knotted 10-10 in the third, Northern used a 7-1 run aided by three kills from Abby Brooks to take a 17-11 advantage. That run helped the Wolves take the final set, 25-20.Â
Pace led the Peacocks with 15 kills in the match while Porter added eight. Block totaled 14 digs in the contest. Cook tallied 20 assists while Fruzen had 16. Abby Buchanan-Kenzinger led the Peacocks in blocks with three.Â
Brooks tied Pace for the game lead in kills with 15 while Nesheim added 14. NSU's setter Ava Nilsson totaled 46 assists while Abby Schauer led all players in digs with 23.Â
Minnesota State 3, Upper Iowa 0
The Mavericks won in set scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-19. The Mavericks closed the first set with a 4-0 run to get the win. The Mavericks then used a 9-1 run to win the second set, and a 4-0 opening run to gain momentum in the third set. Minnesota State hit .180 while the Peacocks were at .038.Â
Marissa Becker led UIU with six kills while Pace added five. Block was the match leader in digs with 18 while also adding two aces from the service line. Fruzen led the Peacocks in assists with 14.Â
MSU's Mary Satori was the match leader in kills with 12, while Avery Rosenberg totaled 11. Jadyn Lester had 29 assists, and Madisen Miller had 17 digs.
