FAYETTE, Iowa - Mante Morrow caught a career-high four touchdowns and Darryl Overstreet Jr. threw a career-high five touchdowns in Upper Iowa's (1-1) 58-14 victory over South Dakota Mines (0-3). The Peacock's top connection accounted for 216 of the team's 556 total yards in Saturday afternoon's victory at Harm-Eischeid Stadium.Â
This is the second time in the last three games that Upper Iowa has totaled over 500 yards of offense. The Peacocks had 597 in last season's closing victory against Missouri S&T. The 58 points are the most UIU has scored since another 58-14 win in 2017 against UMary.Â
On the opening drive of the game, the Peacocks were forced to punt after a delay of game on fourth and short. A Hardrocker offside penalty gave UIU another chance. On the second try, the Peacocks faked a QB sneak and threw it to Morrow for the 55-yard TD.Â
After Mines scored on the ensuing drive, Overstreet found Morrow once again for an 81-yard score. SDM answered with a 14-yard touchdown by Jacoby Ogbonna to take a 14-13 lead. Wide receiver Samuel Mono caught his first touchdown with the Peacocks on a 55-yarder, giving UIU a 20-14 advantage after a wild first quarter.Â
The Peacocks took control of the game in the second quarter. Rushing touchdowns by Damon Head Jr. and Angelo Butts extended the lead to 34-14. Morrow found the endzone again on a four-yard touchdown. Kicker Nathan Behne ended the half with a career-best 47-yard field goal for a 44-14 halftime advantage.Â
Morrow's fourth touchdown of the day came on a 10-yard fade route in the third quarter. It was set up by Head Jr.'s longest rush of the day, the play before of 49 yards.Â
Many Upper Iowa backups saw action in the fourth quarter, including backup quarterback Clark Coleman. The senior found Lonny Melvin Jr. in the endzone for the final touchdown of the game with 1:29 remaining. Upper Iowa outscored South Dakota Mines 45-0 to end the game.Â
The Peacocks won the turnover battle, 4-0. Darrell Matchem started it with an interception in the first quarter for UIU's first stop of the game. Demontay Mack recovered his own strip sack in the second quarter. Gavin Bridgewater and Hunter Kane both recorded fourth-quarter interceptions.Â
Overstreet Jr. totaled a career-high 406 yards, beating his previous high of 341 against Missouri S&T last season. This is the 11th-most in a game in program history. He was 24-of-29 (82.8%) passing, which tied a career-high in completions and marked the best completion percentage of his career.Â
The senior quarterback also became the first Peacock to pass for 5 touchdowns since Marcus Orr in 2023 vs. Missouri S&T. His five touchdown passes tie for the fourth-most in program history.Â
Morrow's 216 yards surpassed his career-best of 151 against Quincy (Ill.) in 2023. That marks the first 200-yard receiving game for a Peacock receiver since 2012 when Keaton Hosch totaled 281 yards vs. Sioux Falls (S.D.).Â
The senior's performance on Saturday is only the third 200-yard game in program history, behind Hosch and Dwayne Croker with 264 in 2006. His four receiving TDs are the most in a game since Alex Stevens caught three in 2019 vs. Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.)Â
Head Jr. finished with a team-high 66 yards on 10 carries. Koda Gates-Bridges added five catches for 54 yards. Melvin Jr. had three catches for 32 yards while Eddie Burgess totaled four for 32 yards.Â
Defensively, Evan Dorn led the team in tackles with 11 (4 solo, 7 assisted). Matchem added eight with half a tackle for loss. Mack totaled two sacks while Wes Willis had 1.5 sacks. SDM was sacked five times while UIU wasn't sacked once.Â
The Peacocks outgained the Hardrockers, 556-321, with a 462-263 advantage through the air. After the first quarter, UIU had 313 yards of offense compared to 197 for Mines. Both teams had 25 rushing attempts, with the Peacocks netting 94 yards and Mines netting 58 yards.Â
Upper Iowa wraps up nonconference action against Michigan Tech (3-0) next weekend. The Huskies picked up a 34-21 win over Hillsdale (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon. Michigan Tech also has wins over Bemidji State and a 45-9 victory over South Dakota Mines this season.Â
Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern Time at Kearly Stadium in Houghton, Michigan, on Saturday, Sept. 20. It will also be homecoming for the Huskies.
