LA CROSSE, Wis - Peacocks men's soccer (1-2) won its first game of the season on the road against Viterbo (2-1-2), 3-1. After trailing most of the game, Dexter Garrett went into a scoring frenzy with two goals in the contest during the 78th minute and in the 84th minute.
Upper Iowa's first goal came while trailing 1-0. Garrett scored the Peacocks' equalizer off a corner kick from Timur Nagy that bounced off Viterbo's goalkeeper, giving him a clear shot straight into the net to make it 1-1 in the 78th minute.
Garrett's second goal, which gave UIU a 2-1 advantage, came off a well-placed free kick by Nikola Momcilovic. Momcilovic sent the ball curling toward the left side of the goal, and Garrett redirected it with a powerful header into the right corner of the net.
During the closing seconds of the game, Jonah Bowen-Burt sealed the deal. He fired a shot straight into the center of the net after driving the ball down the field, finishing the game at 3-1.
The V-Hawks scored early off a left-footed goal by Andrii Ketsuk in the 14th minute. Viterbo had one shot the rest of the half.
Garrett led the Peacocks in goals with two, while tying Matas Dumalakas in the team lead with three shots on goal. Garrett tied a career-high in goals in a game. He tallied two goals in 2023's matchup against St. Ambrose during his sophomore season.
Bowen-Burt also had two shots on goal while scoring his first career goal. Nagy attempted two shots, while Alejandro Suarez, Julien Mesen and Abraham Navarro each attempted one. Momocilovic recorded the only assist of the game.
Noah Nymark-Pedersen guarded the net for the Peacocks. He totaled three saves, two of which came in the first half.
Upper Iowa outshot 15–9 with a 9-4 advantage in the first half and 6-5 in the second half. The V-Hawks had eight saves while UIU had five. Both teams each had six corner kicks and Upper Iowa committed nine fouls, while Viterbo committed 16.
The Peacocks wrap up this week on Sunday by traveling to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take on Parkside (Wis.) at 12 p.m.
