A five-run fourth inning proved to be the difference-maker as Upper Iowa held off Waldorf in a 7–5 ballgame on Monday afternoon at Robertson Woods Field. As a result, the Peacocks improved to 18-24 in the season, while the Warriors dropped to 12–31 overall.
After both teams went quietly in the first, the Peacocks were the first to strike in the bottom of the second. A solo home run to right field from
JJ Vargas opened the scoring and gave the Peacocks an early 1-0 lead. They added another run in the third. Following a one-out double to left field, a ground-ball single to second base from
Gunnar Wicklund brought
Bryce Hall around to score, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Waldorf responded in the top of the fourth. With two outs and runners on the corners, a double to the left-center gap drove in a run to cut the lead to 2-1. The Warriors ran into an out on the basepaths trying to stretch the play, limiting the damage to a single run.
UIU answered quickly in the bottom half of the fifth frame. A single up the middle from
Kyle Hrncir plated a run, followed by another RBI single by
Ethan Sawyer to make it 4-1. A wild pitch moved the runners up, then a single to right field scored two more, pushing the home team's lead to 6-1. With a runner on third, a fly ball to left field turned costly when a throwing error from the outfield allowed a fifth run in the frame to cross, stretching the Peacocks' lead to 7-1.
Waldorf rallied in the top of the fifth. After a one-out single and another base hit, a towering three-run home run to left field brought the Warriors back into the game, trailing 7-4.
Momentum continued to shift in the sixth. The visitors led off the inning with a single and, after back-to-back outs, managed a two-out RBI double down the left field line. The runner scored from first, aided by a throwing error, narrowing the margin to just two runs at 7-5.
The Upper Iowa bullpen held the Warriors to just one hit over the final three innings and held strong with the two-run lead.
In the ninth, Waldorf got a baserunner on via a hit-by-pitch with one out, but a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat, securing the victory for Upper Iowa.
The Warriors totaled nine hits to Upper Iowa's eight and held the home team scoreless over the final five innings, but the fourth-inning offense from the Peacocks proved too much to overcome. Waldorf's bullpen combined for 4.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits and issuing three walks while striking out two.
Mason Adkins earned the win on the mound, throwing five innings and allowing four earned runs while striking out two.
Tyler Glowacki secured the save, his third of the season, by retiring the final three outs in the ninth.
Upper Iowa's offense was powered by
Bryce Hall, who drove in two runs with a double as part of a 2-for-5 day at the plate.
JJ Vargas added a solo home run and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Kyle Hrncir put up a 2-for-4 performance, contributing an RBI single during the Peacocks' five-run fourth inning.
UIU baseball is back home this weekend against Missouri S&T, April 25-27.
