Peacocks End Flyers Unbeaten Season in the GLVC

Upper Iowa took on Lewis in their home opener, where they handed the Flyers their first loss in the GLVC by a score of 3-2. Lewis would then bounce back in game two, as they won by a score of 6-2.

Game One
Junior Sara Reid continued her perfect season in the GLVC as she improved to 4-0 in conference action. Reid struck out seven batters on the day, highlighted by consecutive strikeouts in both the 3rd and 4th innings. She allowed only one earned run, with four hits from 26 batters faced.

Junior Serah Shafer and sophomore Addyson Alber each hit 2-3 on the day while both players scored one run. Shafer and junior Taylor Sedam each got on base on bunts in the first inning, before a two RBI double over the center fielder's glove by Alber would give Upper Iowa the 2-0 lead. Alber would later add a single to center field in the fourth, and an RBI single by junior Kylie Doty, brought her home to extend the lead to three.

Freshman Dorothy Ziebell also hit 2-3 in the game, and freshman Reagon Proud went 1-2, giving Upper Iowa nine hits. With one out atop the seventh, Proud recorded Upper Iowa's most clutch play on the day as she recorded a diving catch in right field which prevented what would have been at least a double for Lewis.

The Flyers scored two runs in the sixth inning, as they capitalized on a throwing error before a pair of singles cut the lead to one. Reid closed out the inning by picking up her seventh strikeout, and she recorded a three-up three down inning in the seventh to secure the 3-2 victory.

Game Two
Freshman Faith Lemonds and fifth year Delaney Vetter each pitched three innings in game two, where Vetter recorded four strikeouts. Both teams would be held scoreless in the first three innings, but the Flyers put up six runs in the fourth. They were able to load the bases with a single and a pair of walks, which would lead to them scoring two runs on walks. The Flyers would then hit a three RBI double to the left field wall, which extended their lead to five. Lewis scored their sixth run on a fielder's choice before a Vetter strikeout closed out the inning.

Coming off her GLVC Player of the Week award, senior Tristin Doster hit 2-2 while scoring one run. Alber once again hit 2-3, and she hit a sixth inning RBI single to first which brought Shafer home for the Peacocks first run of the game. Freshman Dorothy Ziebell added an RBI single on the very next at bat, as her shot down the middle led to a Doster run. The Flyers responded with three straight outs in the seventh inning, as they split the series with a 6-2 win.

The Peacocks will continue the season in Fayette against Rockhurst on Saturday, Mar. 22 and William Jewell, Sunday, Mar. 23. Both double headers will be held at 12 and 2 p.m.
