Upper Iowa baseball hosted Concordia, St. Paul at Robertson Woods Field, trumping the visitors in a 5-3 decision. A four-run fifth inning fueled the Peacocks' success, where they totaled four hits and took advantage of a CSP error.
Brock Zimmer led the blue and white at the plate, recording three of the team's eight hits.
Cameron Powell captured his first win on the mound this season, while
JJ Vargas snagged his second save on the year.
Concordia-St. Paul struck first in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs on the board, they reached the base path on a Peacock fielding error, driving in a run. The play also allowed another run to cross the plate as a throwing error followed, putting the Golden Bears ahead 2-0 early.
Upper Iowa responded in the fourth inning when
Thane Meiners drove in a run with a fielder's choice, scoring
Bryce Hall, who reached on an error earlier in the frame. This cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Peacocks' offense exploded in the fifth inning.
Ethan Sawyer hit a single to right field to drive in
Evan Hubatch, tying the game at 2-2. A wild pitch allowed another run to score, putting the home team ahead 3-2. A sacrifice fly by
Gunnar Wicklund brought in Sawyer, and a single by
Brock Zimmer scored Grams to extend Upper Iowa's lead to 5-2.
The Golden Bears fought back in the seventh inning with a single to right field, bringing home one more run to pull the Golden Bears within 5-3. However, that would be the final score as the Peacocks' defense and pitching held firm for the remainder of the game.
UIU baseball is back in action this weekend on the road against Southwest Baptist on Friday-Sunday (March 21-23).
