UIU Sees Split with TSU in Windy, High-Scoring Showdowns

The warm, windy day at Robertson Woods Field saw many runs scored and a split between Upper Iowa and Truman State. The Peacocks took game one 15-5 (7 innings) but fell in game two, 16-15, in extra innings as the slated seven-inning contest went to 9 frames.

In game two, each team recorded 20 hits apiece. For Upper Iowa, Brock Zimmer and Gunnar Wicklund each tallied six hits on the day.

GAME ONE, UIU-15, TSU-5
Game one started with Truman State taking an early lead in the first inning when a two-run home run to left field gave them a 2-0 advantage. Upper Iowa responded in the second inning when a wild pitch allowed Brock Zimmer to score, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The third inning was the home team's turning point as the Peacock offense exploded for nine runs. Ethan Sawyer's triple to center field brought Paul Safranski to tie the game, 2-2. Then, Gunnar Wicklund hit a two-run homer to center field, giving Upper Iowa the lead at 3-2. Several plays later, Jared Hoodjer capped off the inning with a three-run homer, making it a 9-3 game, and Upper Iowa wasn't finished. UIU concluded the inning ahead 10-3.

Truman State showed some fight in the fifth inning on a solo home run to left field, making it 10-4. However, Upper Iowa continued to bring in runs. Wicklund's RBI single and a score after an infield fly pushed the score to 12-4, and Meiners' two-run single extended the lead to 14-4.

The Bulldogs attempted a late rally in the seventh inning, as a single to left field drove in a run to make it 14-5. But Upper Iowa responded immediately with Hoodjer's RBI single, making the final score 15-5 to conclude the contest early.

Brady Stevens (2-0) picked up the win on the mound, throwing all seven innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs.

GAME TWO, UIU-15, TSU-16
UIU struck early in game two, with Wicklund hitting a two-run homer in the first and the Peacocks adding two more runs in the second for a 4-0 lead. TSU responded in the third, tying it at 4-4 with a two-run homer and a series of RBI hits.

The Bulldogs took control in the fourth, with another two-run homer to give TSU a 7-5 lead. UIU quickly regained the lead, going up 8-7 with RBI hits from Wicklund, Zimmer, and JJ Vargas.

In the sixth, TSU exploded for five runs, pushing them to a 14-8 advantage. However, the Peacocks answered with six runs in the bottom half, tying up the game at 14-14. Wicklund homered at the bottom of the frame to knot everything up.

With the game hanging in the balance, TSU notched a 15-14 lead with an RBI single in the eighth. UIU tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Zimmer's sacrifice fly scored Jared Grams, making it 15-15.

In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs delivered a solo home run to left field, putting TSU ahead 16-15. TSU held off the Peacocks in the bottom half, securing the win and earning a split on the day.
