Upper Iowa opened their final road trip of the regular season with a clutch 54-52 victory over the Maryville Saints.
Anna Soler opened the scoring with a pull-up jumper, and she assisted on a
Kayla Bohr layup two possessions later. Following a pair of jump shots by Maryville,
Brooke Lechleitner backed down her opponent, recording a layup and
Lindsey Davis followed that up with a pull up jumper at the free throw line. Bohr extended the Peacocks lead by converting a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left in the quarter, eclipsing 1,000 points over her collegiate career between Wisconsin-Parkside and Upper Iowa.
With the Peacocks up 14-10 at the start of the second, Davis met her opponent at the rim and denied her shot with a block. The Saints were able to jump into the lead on a 9-0 run, which they closed out by hitting a top of the key three pointer. Soler responded by scoring a layup, and Huberty blocked a shot at the rim before assisting on Bohr's three pointer to tie the game at 19-apiece. Following a Maryville timeout, Huberty gave the Peacocks the lead with a corner three pointer. She followed that up with consecutive two-point jumpers to put Upper Iowa up by five. Both teams would trade free throws in the final minute, as the Peacocks closed out the half with a 30-26 lead.
Both teams traded jump shots atop the third, as Huberty knocked down another three pointer and she would later add a layup on a backdoor cut with Lechleitner dishing out the assist. Following a Saints layup and pair of free throws,
Lindsey Davis swished a three pointer from the elbow, and she scored a layup the following possession to put the Peacocks up by eight points. Following a three-minute scoring drought by both sides, Huberty hauled in an offensive rebound, and scored on a contested layup to help put UIU ahead 45-35 after three quarters.
The Saints got off to a hot start in the fourth as they hit back-to-back two pointers. They followed that up with a steal and fastbreak three pointer, to cap off an 8-0 run. Soler scored on a layup, and Maryville tied the game at 47 as they recorded a layup of their own and two free throws.
Sydnee Nelson got on the board with a bigtime corner three pointer halfway through the quarter, but the Saints would later answer with an and one layup. They took the lead with a shot in the paint, but Bohr was able to tie the game at the charity stripe with 1:30 remaining.
The Peacocks forced a turnover and a missed two-pointer in the paint to get the ball back with 29 seconds remaining. Huberty ran time off the clock, drove to the right off an
Amelia Valentino screen, and swished a pull-up jumper from the elbow with one second remaining, to give the Peacocks a 54-52 victory!
Mia Huberty led all scorers with 22 points while shooting 7-16 from the floor, 2-4 from three-point range and 6-8 at the free throw line. She recorded three rebounds with two assists and blocked one shot.
Kayla Bohr added nine points on her milestone setting day, where she shot 2-5 from the field, knocked down her lone three-point attempt, and went 4-6 at the free throw line. She and Lechleitner also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds on the day.
Lindsey Davis scored nine points on 3-8 shooting, while converting both her free throw attempts. She added two rebounds, a team-high two steals and blocked a shot.
Anna Soler finished with seven points on 3-5 shooting, while recording six rebounds and two assists.
The Peacocks will stay in St. Louis, Mo. as they meet with the UMSL Tritons, Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
