Peacocks Triumph Over Saints in St. Louis

Upper Iowa men's basketball secured an 82-73 victory over Maryville on Thursday night in St. Louis, improving its GLVC record to 11-5 and overall record to 17-7.

The Peacocks opened the game with a 41-19 lead in the first 14 minutes. Their advantage was assembled on a 17-1 burst that began at the 15-minute mark, with mixed scoring across the board. UIU then put together a 10-2 run to help lead them to their largest lead of the night at 22.

However, Maryville mounted a comeback, cutting the deficit to just eight points by halftime (50-42) and only allowing UIU to score nine more points that half. The Saints continued to push their offensive output in the second session, eventually taking a 67-66 lead with 6:18 remaining.

With less than six minutes to play, Hrncir executed an and-one, followed by two additional free throws and a Caleb Delzell's three-pointer to make it a seven-point game (74-67) with under four minutes remaining. Despite Maryville's attempts to close the gap, the Peacocks' offense continued to execute in the final moments, maintaining a comfortable lead and closing out the game 82-73.

Noah King led the way for Upper Iowa, finishing with 22 points on 8-15 shooting, including 3-6 from beyond the arc. Kyle Hrncir contributed 18 points and four steals, while Nick Reid added 17 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Upper Iowa shot 38% from the field and 24% from the three-point range for the game, while Maryville netted 49% from the floor and 17% beyond the arc.

The Peacocks capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 18-24, compared to Saints 2-6. UIU also seized second-chance opportunities, recording 15 offensive rebounds and 17 second-chance points.

The Peacocks will look to keep the momentum going as they face UMSL at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
