Peacocks Best the Bearcats on Last-Minute Shot

Upper Iowa completed a clutch victory over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats, as they won by a score of 64-63 with a game winning shot in the final minute.

The Bearcats jumped ahead with an early 8-2 start, before Lindsey Davis knocked down a layup and recorded a three pointer on the following possession. She added a layup a minute later, and Kayla Bohr scored a basket in the paint, in response to a Bearcat three. Davis finished the first with nine points as she scored another three pointer, to cut the lead to 14-13 at the end of the quarter.

SBU started the second on a perfect 4-4 shooting which extended their lead to 23-14. Mia Huberty recorded her first three of the game and Davis continued to excel as she scored a layup on the fast break. Following a near three-minute scoreless stretch, Bohr drew a foul where she swished both of her free throws. She followed that up by scoring consecutive layups, which made it a two-point game. Southwest Baptist added a layup, and an and one basket, before two free throws by Huberty closed out the quarter with a 30-27 SBU lead.

Bohr remained on fire to start the second half, as she quickly tied the game with a three pointer on UIU's first possession. This ignited a 12-2 run, as Huberty converted another shot from beyond the arc a minute and a half later. Ava Privet then swished back-to-back three pointers, giving Upper Iowa their biggest lead of the game at 39-32. Following two free throws and a steal that led to a fastbreak layup for the Bearcats, Bohr cashed another three pointer and Davis extended the lead to six with a three of her own. With three minutes remaining, Sydnee Nelson scored the Peacocks seventh field goal, and first two pointer of the quarter, as she knocked down a layup. Southwest Baptist was able to tie the game at 47 following a three pointer, and Huberty once again closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws, to cap off a 24-point quarter where UIU pulled ahead by a score of 51-49.

Huberty, Privet and Bohr each recorded layups to begin the fourth quarter. Southwest Baptist was able to continuously draw fouls, as they scored five consecutive points on four trips to the line, before a three-pointer put them ahead by a score of 59-57. Davis tied the game at 59 on a two-point bucket and Bohr's third three of the game put the Peacocks in a 62-61 lead. SBU scored two possessions later, with a heavily contested layup. With 44 seconds remaining, Anna Soler threw a perfect pass to Bohr, and she scored the go-ahead bucket in the paint. Bohr proved to be clutch on the defensive side as well, as she forced a turnover by drawing a charge. Following a pair of missed free throws, the Bearcats found themselves down one with three seconds remaining, while inbounding under their basket. Their inbounds pass was deflected to the side by Helen Staley, going out of bounds with less than a second remaining. SBU was unable to get a shot off on their final inbounds, and the Peacocks picked up a big-time victory by a score of 64-63.

Kayla Bohr recorded a game-high 21 points while shooting 8-15 from the floor, 3-6 from beyond the arc and 2-4 from the free throw line. She added six rebounds and recorded two steals.

Lindsey Davis scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting, while also going 3-6 from three-point range and 1-2 at the line.
