FAYETTE, Iowa - The Upper Iowa women's basketball team (6-3, 3-0 GLVC) had five players in double digits in a 96-50 Monday night win against Waldorf (1-10). The Peacocks finished their four-game, eight-day stretch 4-0 with the victory and have won five straight games.
Ellie Foster led all scorers with 15 points while also grabbing an assist and a steal. She went 6-of-8 (75%) from the field and 3-of-4 (75%) from behind the arc. Kendyl Lodermeier also went 6-of-8 (75%), scoring 12 points with two rebounds and an assist.
Ava Privet and Bryar Duwe were all-around players for the Peacocks, totaling 11 points each. Privet added a career-high six assists, a career-high four steals, five rebounds and a block. She also went 4-of-6 (66.7%) on field goals with a 3-of-5 (60%) mark on 3-pointers. Duwe totaled six assists, six rebounds and three steals while going a team-best +41 on the court.
Freshman Josie Foster was the fifth double-digit scorer with 10 points, shooting 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the field while making a 3-pointer and a free throw. She also grabbed two rebounds.
Magi Bjornson and Jordan McMahon scored eight points each. McMahon was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. Lindsey Davis got her first action this season with five points, four rebounds and an assist.
Sydnee Nelson and Kenzie Deaton both scored four points with three assists. Nelson also had two steals and a rebound. Deaton tied for the team lead in rebounds with six while also getting a steal.
Amelia Valentino had three points, three assists and three rebounds. Steph Cink knocked down a 3-pointer and grabbed three rebounds. Reagan Hofer had five rebounds with two points and an assist. Amara Retreage grabbed four rebounds with two assists.
With an 11-8 early lead, the Peacocks doubled their scoring total without allowing a Waldorf bucket. The Peacocks went 5-for-5 from the field while forcing two turnovers with Nelson and Bjornson each scoring four points to lead, 22-8. Duwe made a jumper in the closing seconds of the opening quarter for a 27-11 advantage after 10 minutes.
The second quarter was the best of the day for UIU as they outscored Waldorf 30-11. From 6:03 to 4:12, the Peacocks forced five straight Warrior turnovers and converted them into layups to take a 45-18 lead. That was a part of a 21-0 run by the Peacocks, during which they shot 10-of-14 (71.4%) while forcing seven Waldorf turnovers. Upper Iowa led 57-22 at half.
UIU started strong in the second half, going on a 9-0 run to start while forcing five Waldorf turnovers. The Peacocks started the quarter 7-for-7 from the field for a 74-28 lead and then led 82-37 after three quarters.
McMahon and Bjornson each scored four points in the fourth quarter, with Bjornson playing all 10 minutes. Cink knocked down a 3-pointer with 4:54 left, and McMahon made a layup at the 3:39 mark for UIU's largest lead of the game at 49 points.
The Peacocks finished the game 41-of-78 (52.6%) from the field and were 35-of-59 (59.3%) in the first three quarters. UIU was 10-of-33 (30.3%) on 3-pointers. The Warriors shot 20-of-55 (36.4%) with 3-of-21 (14.3%) shooting from behind the arc.
Upper Iowa grabbed a season-high 49 rebounds with 17 offensive boards. Waldorf had 27 rebounds. The Peacocks had 13 turnovers while the Warriors had 21. Both teams had 11 steals.
UIU outscored Waldorf off of turnovers, 30-10, in the paint, 50-30, on second chances, 13-4, and on fast breaks, 32-6. Upper Iowa's bench had a 43-13 advantage over Waldorf's.
The 96 points were the most scored by the Peacocks this season, and their third 90-point game overall. It's the most points for the program since a 100-point game against Crown (Minn.) on Dec. 14, 2021. UIU did not have a 90-point game last season.
The Peacocks have two more games in December against Roosevelt (Ill.) (1-5, 0-2 GLIAC) on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and Lake Superior State (Mich.) (0-7, 0-2 GLIAC) on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played in Fayette at Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
