Strong second quarter propels Peacocks to sixth-straight win

Foster scores 18 points in UIU’s 64-56 Tuesday night victory

FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock women's basketball (7-3, 3-0 GLVC) won its sixth straight game with an eight-point win over Roosevelt (Ill.) (1-7) on Tuesday night. Graduate Ellie Foster led the way for the Peacocks with 18 points, her third-highest total of the season. 

UIU outscored Roosevelt 20-8 in the second quarter to take a commanding 37-22 lead at halftime. Foster totaled 10 points in the quarter, knocking down two 3-pointers and four free throws. 

Leading 23-20 with 5:28 left in the period, Foster knocked down a 3-pointer to give UIU its largest lead to that point at six. The Peacocks ended the quarter on a 14-2 run, holding Roosevelt to 0-for-4 from the field with two turnovers. 

The Lakers got going in the third quarter, starting it on a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 39-34. Lindsey Davis and Kenzie Deaton then responded with back-to-back field goals, extending the lead to nine. After a Laker free throw, Ava Privet knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers, widening the lead to 49-35 after a 10-1 run. 

Roosevelt chipped away at the Peacock lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring UIU 19-13 in it. The closest the UIU lead fell to was 57-52. Davis came up with another timely basket after that, extending the lead to seven and helping the Peacocks maintain the lead to win, 64-56. 

Foster had an all-around performance with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot to add to her 18 points. She drew a team-high nine fouls and shot 7-of-8 (87.5%) from the free-throw line. 

Kendyl Lodermeier finished the game with 12 points, two blocks, two rebounds and an assist while making a team-high six field goals. Sydnee Nelson posted her third double-digit game of the season with 10 points while dishing out three assists. The junior guard also had a steal and a block.

Davis totaled a season-high nine points with a team-high three steals. She grabbed four boards, two on the offensive glass, and dished out three assists. Privet finished with eight points, six rebounds and a block. 

Deaton scored four points with a team-high eight rebounds. She was a team-best +13 on the court. Bryar Duwe had three points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Lakers were led by junior center Isabella Pitta with 15 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. She blocked five shots and had three assists, but turned the ball over six times to the Peacocks. Kelly Boyle and Isabel Lindo each had 13 points for Roosevelt. 

The Peacocks had 17 turnovers while Roosevelt had 16 turnovers, both scoring 13 points off of them. 13 of UIU's 17 turnovers came in the second half. RU outscored UIU 38-32 in the paint and 10-9 on second-chance points. 

Upper Iowa finished the game shooting 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the field, 5-of-17 (29.4%) on 3-pointers and 9-of-16 (56.3%) on free throws. Roosevelt finished 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the field, 2-of-11 (18.2%) from behind the arc and 12-of-21 (57.1%) from the charity stripe. 

UIU totaled a season-high six blocked shots as a team. The 18.2% on 3-pointers by Roosevelt is the second-lowest mark from behind the arc against the Peacocks this season. 

2025 closes for Upper Iowa athletics with the women's basketball team on Saturday, Dec. 20. The Peacocks face Lake Superior State (Mich.) (1-7) at 1 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
