QUINCY, Ill. - UIU men's basketball (5-1, 1-0 GLVC) bounced back after trailing by 16 in the second half to beat Quincy (3-3, 0-1 GLVC) in overtime on Monday. Kyle Hrncir led the team with 31 points and 10 rebounds, securing his fourth double-double of the season. The redshirt junior scored seven points in overtime to help Upper Iowa win 96-92
After Upper Iowa led 48-41 at halftime, Quincy came out strong in the second half, outscoring UIU 33-14 over the first 12 minutes of the half. QU led 74-58 at one point.
At 6:15, Hrncir stole the ball off the press and got a three to roll in, cutting Quincy's lead to 10. His shot sparked a 20-4 run, which ended with a Tate Petersen steal and Hrncir layup to take the 80-78 with 51 seconds left. However, with 39 seconds left to go, Hrncir fouled Quincy's Max Booher, who knocked both free throws down on the other end, tying the game with 39 seconds to go.
A late Peacock turnover gave Quincy a chance to win the game. Jakeb Wallingford got two offensive rebounds late and drew a foul. After review, the referees determined that the foul happened after the clock had expired, sending the game into overtime.
Both squads battled back-and-forth during the first four minutes of overtime until Petersen hit a three in the left corner to give the Peacocks a 90-88 lead. With seven seconds left, Tiernan Stynes tried to hit a three to even the game at 95 apiece, but a clutch defensive rebound and free throw by Cael Reichter gave Upper Iowa the 96-92 win.
Austin Hilmer came up big defensively in overtime with three steals, leading to two layups. One steal took an 87-86 lead while the other gave the Peacocks a two-possession advantage, 92-88. The Peacocks shot 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the field in overtime.
To start the game, Jack Miller scored the first seven of nine points for the Peacocks, 9-8. After that, the Hawks took control to outscore UIU 19-8 to lead 27-17 lead with 11:38 left, capped off by a Stynes 3-pointer.
Upper Iowa retook the lead, 36-34, with 4:10 left after Hrncir hit a three from the left corner. UIU kept its momentum and took a 48-41 lead into halftime.
Hrncir added two assists and two steals to his fourth double-double day. Miller had 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Reichter totaled nine points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Petersen scored 14 points, going 4-for-9 (44.4%) from three. Both Hilmer and Ty Pflughaupt had nine points, with Pflughaupt grabbing six rebounds.
Camren Kincaid led Quincy in points with 29 on 4-for-6 (66.7%) from beyond the arc. He added three rebounds and four assists. Max Booher scored 23 points, five rebounds and one assist.
The Peacocks shot 38-for-79 (48.1%) from the field and 12-for-33 (36.4%) from three. UIU outscored QU in points in the paint, 46-32, and in second chance points, 19-6. Quincy led Upper Iowa in fast break points, 15-14.
The team will continue GLVC play this week, hosting Lincoln (4-2, 1-1 GLVC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. and No. 6 Missouri S&T (4-0, 1-0 GLVC) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
