Peacock’s winning streak snapped on Roosevelt buzzer-beater

Hrncir nearly records triple-double in 83-80 loss

FAYETTE, Iowa. - No. 24 Upper Iowa men's basketball (8-2, 3-0 GLVC) fell to Roosevelt (Ill.) (1-8) on Friday, 83-80. Kyle Hrncir recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds. 

As the clock expired in the second half, Roosevelt's Jalen Windham hit a turnaround 3-pointer to win the game, 83-80. This ended UIU's six-game winning streak, which was the longest since the end of the 2023 season. 

With 1:39 to go, Hrncir buried a pull-up 3-pointer from the top of the key to even the game at 78-78. A putback by Roosevelt's Dante Sawyer and two Trey Lewis free throws evened the game at 80-80. 

The Peacocks led 35-30 at the break. Over the first seven minutes of the second half, UIU outscored RU, 18-12. During that stretch, the team went 6-for-7 (85.7%) from the field and 2-for-3 (66.7%) from beyond the arc. At 13:41, the Peacocks led 53-42 as Cael Reichter scored six points and Hrncir scored four points during that stretch. 

However, the Lakers responded with a 15-3 run over the next four minutes to take their second lead of the game, 57-55 at 9:20. During that run, the Lakers shot 4-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-4 from three. Roosevelt knocked down 3-pointers on three straight possessions over the run. RU also blocked four shots over that time period. 

Roosevelt edged the Peacocks 25-23 over the last nine minutes of the game to earn the victory. There were a total of 12 lead changes during those final minutes of the contest. 

Upper Iowa dominated the opening two minutes of the game, forcing three turnovers and scoring the first five points. The Lakers eventually found their footing and battled back and forth with the Peacocks over the next 11 minutes. Roosevelt tied the game, 20-20, at 7:51.

UIU then finished the last 7:51 of the half outscoring RU, 15-10, to take the five-point lead into halftime. Lewis led the Peacocks during that stretch with seven points. Reichter and Tate Petersen each scored three points.

Hrncir nearly recorded a triple-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. He added three steals. Lewis ignited the Peacocks with 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. 

Reichter recorded 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Both Jack Miller and Petersen scored seven points. Ty Pflughaupt posted three points and four rebounds. 

Haramahrie Bowers led the Lakers with 21 points while shooting 8-for-8 from the floor. Davon Smith-Johnson scored the second-most points with 16 and added seven rebounds. 

Upper Iowa went 29-for-51 (56.9%) on its shot attempts and went 13-for-23 (56.5%) from three. Roosevelt made 27-of-52 (51.9%) shot attempts and made 8-of-17 (47.1%) threes. UIU outscored RU in the paint, 36-26, but the Lakers' bench outscored the Peacocks' bench, 37-18.

The Peacocks struggled from the charity stripe, shooting 18-of-31 (58.1%) while Roosevelt shot 12-of-14 (85.7%). This marked the fourth-lowest percentage for UIU and the most free throws the Peacocks have shot this season. The game featured 42 total fouls, with Roosevelt committing 25.  

UIU starts the new year on the road against Maryville (Mo.) (2-9, 0-4 GLVC) on Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. On Dec. 19, the Saints won their game against Health Sciences & Pharmacy (Mo.), 86-68.
