UIU men’s soccer suffers heartbreaking loss on senior Sunday

The Peacocks succumbed 2-1 to the Prairie Stars on Sunday

FAYETTE, Iowa – Upper Iowa men's soccer's (4-11-2, 3-9-2 GLVC) season ended with a 2-1 loss to Illinois Springfield (3-11-3, 2-10-2 GLVC) on Sunday. Senior Alejandro Sanchez had one goal, six shots and one shot on goal.

The Prairie Stars took the early 1-0 lead during the fifth minute of the game. A Peacock foul led to a Corne Boshoff goal.

UIU did not stay silent and responded with a goal during the 40th minute to knot the game, 1-1. Jeremiah Goko guided the ball from the far right side of the field and placed the ball in front of Sanchez, who was located near the center of the goal, 10 yards out. Sanchez shot the ball off his right foot and drilled it in at the bottom middle of the goal.

UIS doubled down and took take 2-1 lead during the 62nd minute with a goal scored by Robin Lemke Bergseth.
John Pranger had three shots with two on goal. Eduardo Gomez Montt had four shots with two on goal. Abraham Navarro added two shots, with one on goal.

Gerardo Romo had two shots, Dexter Garrett had one shot on goal, and both Matas Dumalakas and James Moody had a shot. Jeremiah Goko recorded the game's only assist.

Upper Iowa outshot Illinois Springfield, 20-6, and took 10 corner kicks to the Prairie Stars' zero. UIU had more fouls, 15-11. UIS saved the ball more times, 9-2.  

Sanchez ends the season as the Peacocks' leader in goals (six), shots (44), shots on goal (24), and points (18). Dexter Garrett led the team in minutes with 1,486, and ended his career with 5,617 minutes. Goalkeeper Noah Nymark-Pedersen ended the season with 46 saves. As a team, UIU totaled 39 goals, 36 assists, 222 shots, 99 shots on goal and 114 points.
