Volleyball returns home for weekend play featuring game vs. top team in GLVC

UIU facing UMSL on Friday night for Pink Out For Cancer; McKendree on Saturday afternoon for Black Out

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Upper Iowa volleyball team (1-13, 1-3 GLVC) returns home this weekend to face Missouri-St. Louis (11-4, 4-0 GLVC) and McKendree (Ill.) (3-12, 2-2 GLVC). The Peacocks play the GLVC-leading Tritons on Friday at 6 p.m. and the Bearcats on Saturday at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Upper Iowa fell in three sets to UIndy (12-5, 3-1 GLVC) and four sets to Lewis (Ill.) (9-7, 2-2 GLVC) this past weekend. The Peacocks had three players record career-high marks against Lewis.

Outside hitter Martha Pace totaled a career-high 17 kills while adding 15 digs. She surpassed her previous career-high of 16 kills vs. William Jewell on Sept. 20.

Grace Fruzen finished the game with a career-best 37 assists, the most for her since the Rockhurst (Mo.) game on Sept. 20. She also had 18 digs, tying her career-best from Sept. 12 against Minnesota Crookston.

Sophomore Morgan Block tallied 34 digs, destroying her previous career-best of 21 vs. Rockhurst (Mo.) on Sept. 20. She also had a career-high three service aces. 

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Pace leads the Peacocks in kills with 143 (3.18 per set). She ranks 15th in total kills in the GLVC and eighth in kills per set. 

Kailey Porter is second on the team in kills with 93 (2.02 per set). Lydia Imbrogno has 56 kills, Alexis Moses has 53 kills, Carley Jonker has 47 kills and Erica Conger has 46 kills. 

Gruzen's 307 assists rank ninth in the GLVC. She's averaging 6.53 assists per set, ranking eighth in the conference. Jaeden Cook is second on the team in assists with 120.

Block has totaled 240 digs this season (5.11 per set). She ranks fourth in the GLVC in total digs and second in digs per set. Nationally, she is 24th in digs per set. 

Pace is second on the team in digs with 120 (2.67 per set). Imbrogno has 107 digs (2.61 per set) and Fruzen has 106 digs (2.26 per set).

AROUND THE GLVC
UMSL and Rockhurst (10-5, 3-0 GLVC) are the only two undefeated teams in conference play. Quincy (Ill.), UIndy and Truman State (Mo.) all have 3-1 conference records. Quincy was the lone GLVC team receiving votes in this week's AVCA Coaches' Poll.

ABOUT THE TRITONS - Friday at 6 p.m.
Missouri-St. Louis enters this weekend on a four-game win streak. The Tritons edged out Quincy in five sets this past Saturday. UMSL won a tightly contested fifth set, 17-15. 

Sophomore Alayna Santel leads the team in kills with 196 (3.77 per set), ranking fourth in the conference in kills per set. Maggie Johnson has also added 148 kills (3.26 per set).

Senior setter Caitlin Bishop has been a stud this year with 583 assists (11.66 per set). She leads the conference in both of those categories. Nationally, she is second in assists per set and 12th in total assists. She is the reigning GLVC Setter of the Week.

Defensively, junior Skylar Weaver has 280 digs (5.38 per set). She is also the GLVC leader in both of those statistics. Weaver ranks 21st in the nation in total digs and 15th in digs per set.

Head Coach Ryan Young is in his 15th season as the head coach for the Tritons. He has a 294-145 record as the head coach for Missouri-St. Louis.

ABOUT THE BEARCATS - Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Bearcats are coming off a 1-1 weekend with a three-set loss to Quincy and a four-set win against Illinois Springfield (6-8, 0-4 GLVC). McKendree was 1-10 in nonconference play. 

Senior libero Ashlyn Berczynski was the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week this past weekend with 47 digs in total. She's totaled 237 (4.74 per set) this season, ranking fifth in the conference in both categories. 

On the attack, senior outside hitter Destiny Gray has 145 kills (2.90 per set). She ranks 14th in the GLVC in both statistics. Freshman Avery Wuebbels has emerged with 85 kills (1.89 per set).

Setter Peyton Uptgraft has 345 assists (6.90 per set) during her freshman campaign. She ranks seventh in the GLVC in assists per set and total assists.

Miranda Rodriguez is in her third season with the Bearcats. She has a 29-40 record entering this weekend at McKendree.
