Flyers Maintain First-Place Against the Peacocks

Upper Iowa was unable to knock off top-ranked 12-1 Lewis as the Flyers pulled out a 64-62 win on a late-game layup.

Ava Privet opened the scoring for Upper Iowa, as she knocked down a three pointer, before Lindsey Davis would follow that up with a three of her own. The first quarter was very one-sided however, as the Flyers forced seven turnovers which they converted into 12 points, taking a 19-10 lead at the end of the period.

Privet once again made a jumpshot to start the second, and Mia Huberty cut the lead to six at the free throw line. The Flyers then knocked down a three pointer, and Sydnee Nelson answered by swishing her three-point shot. Lewis then added a layup, which was followed up by a Brooke Lechleitner layup, and the Flyers stepback two pointer was one upped by Huberty knocking down a three on the following possession. Privet added another three pointer, and both teams would stop trading baskets as Anna Soler scored on a layup to make it a two-point game. Following a pair of jump shots by Lewis, Huberty closed out the quarter with a mid-range jump shot to cut the lead to 33-28 at the half.

Soler and Helen Staley each recorded buckets early in the third, before Privet's third three pointer of the game gave the Peacocks a 35-34 lead. The Flyers responded with a pair of threes and two baskets in the paint, taking back the lead. Staley ended their run with a turnaround hook shot, and her layup closed out the quarter with a score of 45-41.

Staley added a midrange jumper to start the fourth, and Huberty cut the lead to one as she knocked down a shot from beyond the arc, before recording a deep two-pointer. Following a Lewis layup, Davis swished a three pointer from the elbow, tying the game at 51 apiece. Both teams continued to trade baskets once again, and Huberty was able to tie the game at 62 on a pull-up jumper with 43 seconds remaining. Lewis drove to the basket on their next possession, and a left side layup with 18 seconds remaining would give them the win as UIU was unable to convert their game-tying shot at the buzzer.

Mia Huberty scored a team-high 17 points on 7-15 shooting, while going a perfect 2-2 from three. She recorded her first double-double of the season as she hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds with two coming on the offensive end. Huberty also dished out four assists and added one steal with two blocked shots.

Helen Staley recorded 14 points on 7-14 shooting, while grabbing nine rebounds. She added three assists and blocked two shots.

Ava Privet was the Peacocks most efficient scorer as she dropped 14 points on 5-8 shooting, while converting 4-6 of her three pointers. She recorded three rebounds, four assists, blocked two shots and added one steal.

The Peacocks will be back in action against the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Saturday, Jan. 11 at noon.
