Saints Succeed in Late-Game Thriller Against the Peacocks

The Peacocks concluded their homestand in a game that came down to the wire, where the Maryville Saints secured an 80-79 win.
 
Kayla Bohr and Anna Soler opened the scoring with consecutive baskets in the paint. Following a Maryville layup, the Peacocks caught fire they scored three three-pointers in a row on shots from Mia Huberty, Sydnee Nelson and Ava Privet. With both teams exchanging baskets, Lindsey Davis scored on back-to-back shots in the paint, and Bohr followed that up with a fastbreak three pointer to push the Peacocks back into the lead. The Saints were able to close the quarter on an 8-3 run, which put them in a 24-20 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
The Peacocks remained hot from beyond the arc, as Nelson knocked down her second three of the game to tie the score at 27 apiece. This would be the first of four consecutive makes from beyond the arc for Upper Iowa, as Bohr, Soler and Privet each swished shots from three-point range to take a 36-31 lead. Following a steal by Privet, Huberty added a mid-range jumper and she scored on a layup with 1:30 left in the half. With the game tied, Nelson cashed another three-point shot to give UIU a 47-44 lead at the half. The Peacocks shot a phenomenal 5-7 from three in the quarter, and they concluded the first half by shooting 9-15 (60.0%) from beyond the arc.
 
The third quarter remained very evenly matched, as neither team was able to extend their lead to more than five points. The Peacocks scored 13 points in the quarter, with nine coming from Huberty as she shot 4-6 from the floor over the ten-minute span. The Saints were able to close out the quarter with a pair of free throws, which tied the game at 60 entering the fourth.
 
UIU began the fourth with a 7-0 run, highlighted by Nelson recorded her fourth three pointer of the game while Huberty added two free throws and a layup. The Saints responded with a pair of three pointers, but Bohr was able to put an end to their run as she scored an and-one layup with Soler making a terrific downcourt pass. Maryville once again knocked down consecutive threes to tie the game, before Soler hit a clutch three to give Upper Iowa a 75-72 lead. Following an and one by Maryville, Upper Iowa shot 4-4 from the free throw line, before a Saints three-pointer cut the lead to one. With ten seconds remaining, Maryville drew a foul on their layup attempt, where they converted both free throws to take the lead. The Peacocks would attempt a last second fadeaway shot, but it rimmed out right before time expired as Maryville snuck by with the 80-79 win.
 
Mia Huberty scored a team-high 22 points on 9-20 shooting while knocking down both her free throw attempts. She added six rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked one shot.
 
Kayla Bohr put up 15 points on 5-8 shooting, while shooting 2-3 from three and 3-4 at the free throw line. She hauled in six rebounds and added two assists.
 
Anna Soler recorded 12 points on 4-5 shooting, and she shot a perfect 2-2 at both the three-point line and the charity stripe. She grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and recorded one steal and one block.
 
Sydnee Nelson dropped a career-high 12 points on an incredible 4-5 shooting from beyond the arc while adding one steal.
 
Ava Privet added ten points on 4-8 shooting, converting 2-5 of her shots from three. She recorded four assists and added one steal.

The Peacocks will hit the road for two consecutive weekends, starting with a matchup against Lewis on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and Indianapolis on Saturday, Jan. 11 at noon.
