Panthers Sneak Past Peacocks in Back-And-Forth Battle

The Peacocks put up a great fight against the first-place team in the GLVC, the Drury Panthers, as it remained evenly matched through all four quarters. Upper Iowa came up just short in a 74-67 decision.

The first quarter was very back and forth as neither team was able to take more than a three-point lead. Anna Soler opened the scoring with a bucket in the paint and Kayla Bohr added a three-pointer the following possession. Following a Helen Staley steal, Bohr scored on an and-one layup on the break, as the Peacocks started the game shooting 3-4 from the floor. Bohr continued to thrive as she recorded consecutive mid-range jumpers, finishing the quarter with ten points.

With the Peacocks down 17-16 at the start of the second, Staley quickly put them back into the lead with a two-point make. She followed that up with another jump shot in the paint, before Amelia Valentino pushed UIU's lead to four with a three-pointer. Soler added a layup in the paint and an and one layup by Valentino put the Peacocks in a 35-33 lead at the half.

Mia Huberty knocked down a three-pointer 30 seconds into the second half, and she scored another shot from beyond the arc to tie the game at 41-apiece. The Peacocks first three baskets all came from range, as Sydnee Nelson swished her three-point jumper, which was then matched by Drury. Just like the first half, neither team was able to extend their lead by more than four points in the third, and the scoring would end up being tied at 44, 46, 48, and 51 points as both sides continued to trade baskets. With 50 seconds remaining, Soler swished a three-pointer which helped give UIU a 54-53 lead entering the fourth.

The Panthers started the fourth shooting 3-4 from the field, giving them a four-point lead. An offensive rebound by Staley led to a second chance two-pointer by Lindsey Davis, and Staley was able to tie the game at 61 as she scored her first three-pointer on the season. She added two big-time free throws before scoring a layup to cut the lead to two with 33 seconds remaining. With the Peacocks forced to foul, Drury closed out the game by shooting 5-6 at the line, sealing the 74-67 win.

Anna Soler recorded her second double-double on the season as she recorded team-highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 7-12 from the floor, 1-2 from three-point range and dished out the most assists on the team with four.

Mia Huberty dropped 14 points on 2-5 three-point shooting, while going 4-5 at the charity stripe. She grabbed four rebounds and blocked one shot.

Helen Staley added 13 points on 5-9 shooting, while shooting 1-1 from three, and 2-2 at the free-throw line. She hauled in five rebounds and recorded one steal.

Kayla Bohr scored ten points on 4-10 shooting, and she added two rebounds.

The Peacocks will conclude their road trip against Southwest Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
