Mia Huberty Eclipses 1,000 Career Points in Victory over UMSL

The Peacocks took down the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons by a score of 56-44, improving to 6-4 on the year while going 3-1 in the GLVC.

Senior Anna Soler was unfazed by the Tritons top-ranked defense (51.0 points allowed per game) as she scored the opening layup before knocking down back-to-back threes to give the Peacocks an early 10-2 lead. Sophomore Ava Privet added to UIU's lead as she hit her first three pointer of the game, before her and freshman Lindsey Davis added baskets in the paint. UMSL closed out the first with a three pointer right before time expired, to cut into UIU's 17-15 lead at the end of the quarter.

With both teams evenly matched halfway through the second quarter, senior Mia Huberty drove past her defender, and recorded a right-side layup where she became the 16th Peacock to score 1,000 career points. Senior Helen Staley closed out the half by making a layup, but the Tritons were able to score 10 of their 13 second quarter points in the paint as they took a 28-25 lead at the half.

Huberty continued to rise through the ranks on UIU's all-time scoring list, as she swished a three pointer to start the third, and added a pair of free throws to tie the game at 32 apiece. Soler pushed the Peacocks into the lead on a jumper in the paint before UMSL responded with consecutive layups. With 37 seconds remaining, fifth year Kayla Bohr converted an and one basket on an assist from Huberty as the Peacocks entered the fourth with a 40-37 lead.

Bohr scored another midrange jumper at the start of the fourth, before a Huberty three-pointer pushed the Peacocks lead to six. The Tritons were able to get to the foul line early into the quarter, and they shot 6-6 from the charity stripe. Following a UMSL missed three, the Peacocks took advantage of a fastbreak opportunity, where Davis made her defender jump on a pump fake, and found Bohr in the corner who swished her clutch three-pointer to extend the lead to 50-43. Soler followed that up with an offensive rebound that she converted into a second-chance layup, and a Huberty jump shot would ice the game as UIU secured the 56-44 victory.

The Peacocks defensive presence thrived throughout the fourth as they held Missouri-St. Louis to 0-12 shooting in the quarter, and 17-61 (27.9%) shooting over the course of the game.

Anna Soler scored her season-high 16-points on an incredibly efficient 6-8 shooting while going 2-3 from beyond the arc. She also hauled in a season-high ten rebounds with three coming on the offensive end.

Mia Huberty recorded 14-points on her historic day where she shot 2-2 from three-point range and dished out a team-high five assists.

Kayla Bohr scored 11-points on 5-8 shooting and Helen Staley added six points, grabbed ten-rebounds and recorded five assists.

The Peacocks will conclude their homestand against the Maryville Saints on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m.
