Peacocks Pounce the Hawks in Lockdown Defensive Effort

The Peacocks improved to 5-1 on their home floor as they knocked off the Rockhurst Hawks by a score of 65-49.

Kayla Bohr opened the UIU scoring with a three-point swish, and Brooke Lechleitner added a steal which she converted into two free throws after being fouled on the fast break. Ava Privet scored a three of her own to add to the Peacock lead, before Bohr made a contested layup in the paint. The Peacocks defensive presence held Rockhurst scoreless for the final six minutes of the first, and they concluded the quarter up 14-4.

Privet added another three atop the second quarter, and the Hawks responded with their first three of the game. Anna Soler and Privet each added layups, and a Mia Huberty three pointer would put the Peacocks back into a ten-point lead. The Peacocks closed out the quarter on a hot streak, that started with Helen Staley hauling in a rebound and going coast to coast on the layup. Lindsey Davis converted a pull-up jumper on the following possession, and she added an and one layup, on a backdoor cut assist from Huberty on the inbounds pass. These three consecutive baskets put UIU into a 31-18 halftime lead, where they outscored the Hawks 12-0 on points off turnovers.

Bohr recorded a layup to start the third, and she one-upped herself by adding another three pointer two minutes later. Following a Rockhurst three, Lechleitner scored on a backdoor cut, which was the first of six consecutive Peacock points as she added two free throws and another layup. Sydnee Nelson extended the Peacock lead on a deep three, and UIU closed out the quarter up 49-36.

Nelson continued to thrive beyond the arc as she knocked down another three point bucket to start the fourth. The Hawks were able to get back in the game as they converted an and one layup before knocking down a three pointer and a pair of midrange jumpers. Huberty put an end to any momentum Rockhurst gained, as she swished a big-time three pointer to put the Peacocks up by nine with three minutes remaining. Privet added to the lead with her third three of the game, and Bohr iced the game on her third three pointer as well, swishing her shot from the corner to secure the 65-49 victory.

The Peacocks thrived on the defensive end in all four quarters, as they held the Hawks to 32.8% (20-61) shooting from the floor and 26.7% (4-15) from three-point range. On the offensive side, UIU continued to show why they are the best three-point shooting team in the GLVC, as they shot 45.5% (10-22) from beyond the arc.

Ava Privet scored a team-high 15 points as she shot 5-8 from the floor and 3-5 from beyond the arc. She hauled in four rebounds and added one steal.

Kayla Bohr finish the day with 13 points on 5-10 shooting, while converting 3-4 of her three pointers. She added three rebounds and one assist.

Mia Huberty recorded 11 points on 2-5 three-point shooting, while going 5-6 at the charity stripe. She grabbed three boards, dished out four assists and blocked a shot.

Brooke Lechleitner scored eight points as she shot 2-3 from the floor and a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. She recorded two steals and added one assist.

Helen Staley recorded five points on 2-5 shooting, while recording team-highs with ten boards and seven assists. She added one steal and one blocked shot.

The Peacocks will be back Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. as they close out their homestand against the William Jewell Cardinals.
