Peacock men's wrestling competed at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, finishing with a 1-2 record on Friday after facing three Top 12 teams ranked by the NWCA. In a standout performance, Upper Iowa pulled off the only first-round upset, defeating the second-ranked team in the nation and the #4 seed in the tournament, Glenville State, with a 20-14 victory.
UIU recorded wins in six of the bouts against the Pioneers with three ranked triumphs:
Ethen Doty defeated #5 Gabe Onoroto,
Lawson Losee beat #1 Hayden Pummel, and
Geoffery Freeman trumped #7 Nick Johnson.
#24 Upper Iowa faced #6 McKendree in the second round and was edged out by the Bearcats in a narrow 21-18 decision. Notable victories included
Treyton Ackman's pin over the #14 Jason Strope (1:10) and
Colter Bye's defeat over #11 Zeke Waltz. The Peacocks fought tough throughout the match and came out on the wrong side of two sudden victory losses.
The Peacocks versed #12 Grand Valley State in the last match of the day and came up short, 21-15. Upper Iowa was down 15-3 after the 149 bout, but rattled off four straight wins by decision, including Losee's victory over #4 Josh Kenny and Bye's triumph over #9 Brayden Mirjavadi. With the score tied up at 15 apiece, the Peacocks dropped the 197 match by decision (14-13) to #15 Wyatt Miller and the 285 bout to #5 Cater Blough by decision (2-0).
Peacock men's wrestling is back on the mat tomorrow against Tiffin at 11 a.m.
