Upper Iowa pulled off a reverse sweep in game one against UW Parkside, clawing back from a 2-0 deficit and claiming the last three sets. Their momentum continued into the second game of the day as they trumped MSU Moorhead 3-1. The day included even more excitement as
Zoe Semelroth went on to set her career-high of kills in a game with 24, while
Nicole Pozorski eclipsed the 3,000 career-assist threshold, only the third Peacocks in program history to reach that mark.
Â
Upper Iowa fell in game one and two by scores of 25-18 and 25-20 before rallying off three straight sets 25-15, 25-23 and 15-7.Â
Â
In game one against the Rangers, UIU had the advantage in kills (64), assists (57), blocks (10), digs (93) and service aces (8). Following behind Semelroth's career-high performance on offense was
Lydia Imbrogno and
Maria Winter, each tallying ten kills.
Jaeden Cook led the team in service aces with four.Â
Â
Defensively, Winter tallied 26 digs and
McKenna Diermeier added 23. Semelroth held a strog presence at the net as she put up a game-high eight blocks.Â
Â
The Peacocks dominated set three with a game-high hitting percentage (.469) and only two errors, seeping into set four with their largest number of kills in a set with 18. In that same set, the Peacocks found themselves down 22-18, but rattled off a 7-1 burst to push a fifth set.Â
Â
UIU cruised to another victory in set five with another 7-2 run to cap off their first win of the season.Â
Â
"We came out slow and not really confident in who we were or our identity," noted Head Coach Jim Dietz. "You could see it clicking by the end of the second set, and it built from there. We knew we had another match to go and needed to immediately refocus on that."
Â
Game two against the Dragons included another three-set slide for the Peacocks, as they fell in the first period 25-18 before rallying off winning scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-18.
Â
UIU struggled to contain MSUM in the first set of their game as they allowed the Dragons to go on a 9-1 burst to jump out to a 13-9 lead, gliding to the 25-18 win.Â
Â
"When a tournament starts to get behind schedule, it can get interesting," noted Dietz. "You can get a bit sluggish from waiting, and I think some of that hit us in the first set. After that, we wound up playing very well, especially in the last two sets."
Â
In set two, the Peacocks had a 24-21 advantage, but allowed their opponent to tie the game up at 24. A kill from
Alexis Moses and
Martha Pace sealed the deal as they edged out the win.Â
Â
Upper Iowa breezed through sets three and four, earning their second win of the day and advancing them to a 2-1 record on the season.Â
Â
Semelroth contributed 22 kills and three blocks, Imborgno led the team in service aces with three and dugs with 19, while Pozorski tallied 48 assists.Â
