Upper Iowa baseball saw their 2024 campaign come to a conclusion after earning a split on Saturday afternoon against Truman State. UIU won the first game 12-4 and dropped game two in an 11-5 decision. The Peacocks finished the season 13-34 overall and 10-26 in the GLVC, placing them in a three-way tie for 12th, improving from the 14th spot prior to the series this weekend.
GAME ONE UIU-12, TSU-4 (7 INN.)
The Bulldogs were on the attack right away to start game one, scoring three runs in the first inning behind two hits. The Peacocks responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame from
Gabe Bombardier, his tenth of the season.
Justin Baehler lined an RBI single to left field to tie up the game 3-3.
Upper Iowa took the lead in the fourth inning after a single from Bombardier knocked in
Ethan Sawyer for their fourth run of the contest. They earned one more run in the fourth before tacking on another four in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 9-3.
Truman State scored their fourth and final run of the game in the top of the sixth to cut into the lead and trail by five runs.
UIU picked up three runs in the bottom of the sixth, grabbing a 12-4 lead that held for the remainder of the game. Sawyer collected two RBIs on a double to center field, bringing around
Steve Marhefke and
Justin Baehler.
Bombardier and Sawyer led the team with three hits each.
Paxton Gravlin started on the mound and went for four innings, earning his second win of the season. He struck out four batters and allowed three earned runs.
Jason Jennerjohn nabbed a save on the bump as he tossed for three innings and allowed one earned run while ringing up three batters.
GAME TWO UIU-5, TSU-11 (9 INN.)
Truman State found their stride midway through game two as they tallied six runs in the fifth inning alone. They saw sporadic scoring throughout the game to aid them in their 11-5 win over the Peacocks.
UIU held a 2-1 after the first inning and neither team scored again until the fourth frame, where Truman State brought in one run to tie the game up 2-2.
The Bulldog offense unleashed in game the fifth inning, as they recorded six runs fueled by four hits while taking advantage of a Peacock error.
Their offense continued to shine as they collected three more runs spread across the sixth and seventh innings.
Upper Iowa made their way back onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning on a single to center field from
Ethan Sawyer, bringing in
Steve Marhefke and
Brock Zimmer. The two runs saw the Peacocks trail 11-4.
UIU brought in their last run of the game in the bottom of the eighth after a
Justin Baehler single up the middle scored Zimmer.
Brayden Deering started the game on the mound for the Peacocks and lasted four innings, allowing two earned runs.
