Upper Iowa men's basketball survived the quarterfinals of the GLVC Championships as they defeated Missouri-St. Louis 91-84 in a thrilling overtime victory. The two teams were neck and neck the entire way until
Nick Reid hit back-to-back three pointers with under three minutes remaining in the overtime period.
The six point swing gave the Peacocks an 81-76 lead with one minute left to go. The Tritons put the Peacocks at the charity stripe where they converted ten free throws to tack onto their total and secure the five-point win.
Upper Iowa was down by one (71-70) in regulation with 0:55 seconds left to play, as they strung together three free throws for the two-point advantage. UMSL trekked down the court and hit a pull up with two seconds on the clock to tie up the game. A
Jake Hilmer half court heave was unsuccessful at the buzzer, which sent the game into the third period.
At the halftime break, UIU was down 38-37 to UMSL after 38.7% shooting from the field and 9.1% from long distance. The Peacocks started off hot in the second half as they shot over 60% from the field and beyond the arc in the first 12 minutes of the second stanza. They improved their percentage to 48% from the field and 33% beyond the arc in the second half alone.
J. Hilmer finished the game with 34 points, fueled by a 21-22 outing at the charity stripe.
Noah King followed behind with 21 points on 8-15 shooting.
Kyle Hrncir notched a double-double as he recorded 11 points and hauled in ten rebounds, while adding a team-high five steals.
Caleb Delzell was the second Peacock with a double-double as he added ten points and ten rebounds in this evening's contest.
The Peacocks are set to play the 8:15 p.m. game on Saturday against the winner of the Illinois Springfield and Lewis matchup.
