The Upper Iowa baseball squad picked up their first GLVC victory as they defeated Rockhurst 5-4 on the first day of their weekend series. The Peacocks totaled 11 hits and 4 RBI's.
Gunnar Wicklund,
Gabe Bombardier and
Ethan Sawyer each tallied two hits, while
Steve Marhefke led the team in RBI's with two.
Isaiah Maes (2-1) earned the win on the mound after throwing seven innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He was relieved in the eighth inning by
Nick Hartje, who gave up three hits and two runs.
Both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning where the Peacocks put one run on the scoreboard.
Brock Zimmer lined a double down the left field line, and was batted around the bases after
Ethan Sawyer belted a double to right center.
Upper Iowa tacked on another two runs to their lead in the fifth inning as they registered three singles from
Bryce Hall, Bombardier and Wicklund.
The Hawks retaliated with their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. They reached second base after crushing a ball to left center. The base runner advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
UIU stretched their lead to 5-1 in the eighth inning as they tallied another three hits and two runs.
Rockhurst chipped away at the lead as they hit a three-run home run to start the bottom of the eighth, clawing back to a one-run deficit (5-4). The Peacocks were able to get three outs before any further damage, and held off the Hawks in the bottom of the ninth to secure their first conference victory.
The Peacocks are scheduled for a double header against the Hawks tomorrow starting at 12 p.m.
