UIU Baseball Bounces Back in Game Two Versus UW-Parkside

The Peacocks finished their opening day of competition with a 1-1 mark after splitting a pair of games with the Rangers on Robertson Woods Field. UWP picked up game one 11-5 behind 13 hits, while Upper Iowa rallied in game two and defeated the visitors 8-3 behind six hits, including home runs from Gabe Bombardier and Gunnar Wicklund. The Peacocks head to Kenosha, Wis. on Tuesday in another double header with UW Parkside. Time and place is still TBD.

Game one, UIU-5, UWP-11

The Rangers had hot bats right from the start as they brought seven around the bases in the first inning of game one on six hits, while bringing in an additional run in the second inning for the early 7-0 lead. The Peacocks etched their first run on the scoreboard in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from J.J Vargas that brought around Bryce Hall

UIU did not record their first hit on the game until the fourth inning as Connor Greuel tattooed a single to right-center, but was tagged while advancing to second base for the third out of the inning.

Parkside tallied another four runs in the fifth inning to bring their advantage to 11-1. The Peacocks responded in the sixth inning with four runs of their own. A double to center field from Sage Stellmacher brought Thiessen home and a single from Steve Marhefke sent Stellmacher over the plate. With one on base, Mike Gentile Jr. drilled a ball over the left field fence to give the Peacocks another two-run boost, cutting the deficit 11-5 which held for the remainder of the game as neither team scored in the seventh inning.

Austin Grube (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Rangers as he allowed two hits and no earned runs. Paxton Gravlin threw 3.2 innings allowing seven hits and five runs, while Nick Hartje tossed 2.1 and gave up zero hits and zero runs. Kyle Hrncir started the game for Upper Iowa and allowed six hits and six runs, five of which were earned.

Game two, UIU-8, UWP-3

In game two, Upper Iowa flipped the script as they were the ones who were able to bring in a handful of runs in the early innings of the contest. Gabe Bombardier homered in his first at bat and collected an RBI after bringing in Bryce Hall, who had gotten on base with a walk. UIU put up another three runs in the second inning on their second home run of the game as Wicklund crushed one out of the park. His at bat was followed up by a single from Chase Chappel, ultimately leading to another run, giving the Peacocks an early 5-0 lead.

The Rangers made their way onto the scoreboard in the third inning after they recorded a double with the bases loaded, bringing around three.

The Peacocks picked up runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings while UW Parkside remained scoreless for the rest of the day. Chappel finished the game 2-3 from the plate and Bombardier collected a team-high two RBI's.

Isaiah Maes threw seven innings for the Peacocks, picking up his first win of the season. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs, recording five strikeouts and zero walks. Brennan Sefrit came out of the bullpen and pitched for two innings without giving up a hit or run.
