The Peacocks have moved to 10-11 (7-10 GLVC) on the season as they were unable to conquer Missouri S&T in a competitive 66-64 game.
The Miners caught fire early into the first quarter as they knocked down a pair of three pointers and were able to attack the basket to take an early lead. The Peacocks were able to end the quarter on a 10-2 run with
Mia Huberty leading the way as she knocked down multiple midrange jumpers and a three pointer.
Brooke Evenson put together a great defensive performance to start the game, as she recorded three steals and hauled in four rebounds.
Faced with a 23-12 deficit in the second quarter, Huberty ignited the Peacocks comeback by converting on an and-one layup.
Katie Tornstrom would then intercept a pass that led to an open layup and
Cassidy Pagel would follow that up with a shot from the post.
Alaina Brenning scored in the paint to cap off the Peacocks 9-0 run, and the Peacocks were able to tie the game at 29 apiece as Tornstrom and
Ava Privet swished their three-point shots. Upper Iowa was able to take the lead on a Privet layup and a pair of Huberty free throws gave the Peacocks a 33-29 lead going into the half.
Kayla Bohr opened the second half scoring for UIU followed by Tornstrom making multiple jumpers in the paint. The Miners were able to thrive in the paint as their first five field goals all came on layups and they took advantage of their free throws, going 6-6 at the charity stripe in the quarter. Evenson was able to add another seven points, including a two-point jumper to give the Peacocks a 50-48 lead.
With both teams tied entering the fourth, the Miners were able to open the scoring before Tornstrom cashed a three pointer and made another layup off a stolen pass. Following a 7-0 run by the Miners, Privet made her third three pointer of the game and a Tornstrom jumper gave UIU a 60-59 lead. Missouri S&T continued to capitalize on their free throw attempts, going 14-16 on the day, to give them the lead at the four-minute mark. With UIU down by three, Huberty was able to drive by her defender and make a layup with seven seconds remaining, to make it a one-point game. The Miners went 1-2 at the line to make it a 66-64 game, and they played great defense on UIU's final possession as the Peacocks were unable to convert on their heavily contested three-pointer at the buzzer.
Katie Tornstrom finished with 16 points on 7-18 shooting. Tornstrom added six rebounds, and recorded seven assists with no turnovers, and four steals which were both game highs.
Mia Huberty also scored 16 points which came on 6-14 shooting, and she shot a perfect 3-3 at the free throw line. She added five rebounds and dished out three assists.
Brooke Evenson recorded a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds on 5-11 shooting. She finished the game with three steals and blocked a shot.
Ava Privet scored 11 points as she made her lone two-point attempt and shot 3-7 from beyond the arc.
The Peacocks will be back on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. as they take on the Maryville Saints in the Alumni Day game.
