Top-Ranked Flyers Fend off the Peacocks

Upper Iowa put together a hard-fought matchup against Lewis, but came up just short against the first place Flyers in a 67-63 game.

Coming off her 1,000-career points milestone against UIndy, Brooke Evenson opened the scoring for the Peacocks before assisting on back-to-back layups by Kayla Bohr. Amelia Valentino swished a three pointer at the three-minute mark, but the Flyers ended the quarter on a 10-0 run as they were able to outrebound the Peacocks, while shooting 50% from three-point range.

Amelia Valentino added her second three of the game on a heavily contested shot, to open the second quarter scoring. Mia Huberty led the way in the second, scoring seven of UIU's next nine points as she made both her free throws, converted on a layup, and knocked down a three. Bohr continued to thrive in the paint, as she made a basket from each block, giving her a team-high eight points in the half on 4-7 shooting. With 20 seconds remaining and no shot clock, the Flyers looked to run down the clock and add one final shot before the half. Alaina Brenning had other ideas as she ripped the ball out of the Flyers hands, and scored on a fast break layup to cut Lewis' lead to 33-27 at the half.

The Flyers opened the scoring in the second half, but the Peacocks responded by driving to the paint and converting on three layups in a row, making it a 35-33 game. Lewis was able to keep their lead throughout the third, as they made all six of their free throw attempts. Evenson ended the quarter scoring six of UIU's final seven points, recording a steal that led to an open layup to reach double figures with ten seconds remaining. Both Evenson and Katie Tornstrom recorded two steals in the third, and the Peacocks ended the quarter down 48-45.

Evenson began the fourth quarter blocking her second shot of the game, which led to another Bohr bucket on a great post move. Tornstrom would later swish a contested three from the corner and a Huberty two-point jumper made it a 53-52 game, with the Peacocks down by one. The Flyers were able to convert on consecutive jumpers, but the Peacocks would cut back into their lead as Tornstrom recorded an offensive rebound and threw a pass to Huberty who knocked down a three from the top of the key. Huberty would go on to score seven consecutive points as she added a layup and midrange jumper. UIU was forced to foul at the end of the game, and the Flyers would knock down multiple free throws to secure a 67-63 victory.

Mia Huberty led all scorers with 20 points on 8-16 shooting while going 2-4 from three-point range. She has scored 20+ points against the Flyers in both of their meetings this season.

Kayla Bohr finished with 15 points on 6-12 shooting and added three rebounds. She has averaged 16 points per game over UIU's previous three contests.

Brooke Evenson finished with 12 points on 6-14 shooting, and added a team-high 10 rebounds for the sixth time this season. She dished out three assists, stole the ball three times, and added two blocks.

The Peacocks will return to Fayette, where they will be playing their next four games at home. Upper Iowa will begin their homestand against Missouri S&T on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. before taking on Maryville on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
