Upper Iowa men's wrestling defeated Minnesota State for the fourth consecutive time on Sunday evening, edging them in a 29-9 decision. The Peacocks improved to 4-0 (1-0 GLVC) on the season, while the Mavericks fell to 0-1 on the year.
The dual started off with a bang at 184 as #10 Colter Bye trumped Evan Farley by major decision (12-4). Bye started off down 3-1 after the first period, but an escape after choosing bottom, followed by a takedown in the second session, gave him the 5-3 lead. Two more takedowns and a point for ride time gave Bye the win and the Peacocks a 4-0 lead.
Geoffery Freeman (197) came up to the mat next and executed the team's only tech fall of the evening in a 20-4 decision. He picked up the victory in 5:14 and recorded six takedowns in his bout.
Clayton Ours was victorious in a major decision, defeating Tanner Gaffey 15-7 and giving the Peacocks the 13-0 advantage over the Mavericks.
Jackson Heaston (125) trumped Jacob Fitzpatrick in a 15-9 decision. The match was back-and-forth, as Heaston held a slim 7-5 lead at the end of the first period. The third period had several lead changes, but it was UIU that came out on top and finished the bout strong with a takedown and three near fall points to propel from the 9-9 tie to win 15-9.
Dawson Schmit (133) was down 3-0 at the end of the first period and trailed 3-1 at the end of the second. He rallied back in the third session and recorded a takedown and earned the riding time point take to climb to his 5-3 victory.
#12 Ryan Wehner went on to defeat his opponent in a 9-2 decision, giving Upper Iowa the 22-0 lead after his win. His triumph was fueled by a two-point reversal and takedown in the third period.
Ethen Doty followed up Wehner's performance with a 10-6 decision of his own, boosting UIU's score to 25-0. Doty managed most of his scoring in the first period and he notched a takedown followed by a three-point near fall. In the third period, he recorded two escapes, a takedown and a point for riding time.
Minnesota State scored its first points of the dual in the 157 and 165 bouts. Dalton Schams (157) was defeated by tech fall (18-0) while Collin Altensey (165) was trumped by major decision (14-5). The Mavericks earned nine points after these two matches, trailing the Peacocks 25-9.
Lawson Losee (174) concluded the dual with a 14-6 major decision over Drake Hayward. Losee led 6-4 after the first period and 9-6 after the second period. He rattled off a takedown, one point for an escape and a point for ride time in the third session.
