Upper Iowa was unable to end Missouri S&T's four-game win streak as the Miners snuck by with a 66-64 win.
The first quarter was very low scoring as the Miners would finish the period up 10-8. Sophomore
Sydnee Nelson converted a layup, and freshman
Lindsey Davis followed that up with a three pointer on the next possession, at the five-minute mark.
Junior
Amelia Valentino opened the second quarter by knocking down a three pointer and Nelson added a shot from beyond the arc to put the Peacocks up 14-12. Following a pair of Miner layups, the Peacocks hot shooting streak continued as senior
Mia Huberty and sophomore
Ava Privet each added their first baskets of the game on shots from the three-point line. Both teams continued to trade baskets, while junior
Brooke Lechleitner and fifth year
Kayla Bohr each added layups to give the Peacocks a one-point lead. With one second remaining, Valentino made her second shot from beyond the arc, to give the Peacocks a 29-25 lead at the half, where they shot 5-10 from three-point range in the quarter.
The Miners made a fastbreak layup to start the second half, and senior
Helen Staley responded with a jumper in the paint. The Peacocks hot-shooting continued in the third quarter as they shot 4-5 from the three-point line on baskets from Privet, Huberty, Bohr, and Nelson. Davis and Privet each added fastbreak layups near the end of the quarter, and the Peacocks would conclude the third with a 55-39 lead.
S&T cut the lead to ten early in the fourth, and Bohr responded by knocking down another shot from three. Following a pair of Miner free throws, S&T scored twice in the paint, and multiple three pointers by Addyson Kent cut UIU's lead to one with two minutes remaining. On the Peacocks next possession, Privet received a pass in the corner, made her opponent jump on the pump fake, before knocking down the deep two-pointer. The Miners tied the game with a three on the next possession, and they forced a steal which resulted in a go-ahead layup with 28 seconds left. Staley came up clutch for Upper Iowa as she backed down her opponent in the paint, and hit a hook shot to tie the game at 12 seconds remaining. The Miners then scored a late-game layup with two seconds remaining, to seal the 66-64 win.
Mia Huberty led all Upper Iowa scorers with 14 points, and she hauled in seven rebounds. She shot 2-3 from beyond the arc and finished with a team-high five assists.
Kayla Bohr and
Ava Privet each scored ten points with Bohr shooting 2-3 from three, while Privet shot 4-10 from the field.
Helen Staley added seven points on 3-7 shooting, while recording a team-high nine rebounds plus three assists.
Sydnee Nelson recorded eight points and five rebounds, while shooting 2-5 from beyond the arc.
Brooke Lechleitner added four points on 2-2 shooting and she was phenomenal on the defensive end with eight rebounds and a game-high three blocks.
The Peacocks will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. as they face GLVC newcomer, Lincoln, in Jefferson City, Mo.
