Peacocks Come up Clutch Against the Hawks in Double Overtime Victory

Upper Iowa tipped off GLVC action on a high note as they ended the Quincy Hawks' three-game win streak in an 88-84 double overtime victory.

The Hawks got off to a hot start as they took an early 8-2 lead three minutes into the game, before extending that lead to 18-11. Senior Mia Huberty would then cut into the lead by converting a three pointer at the one-minute mark and senior Anna Soler and junior Brooke Lechleitner each added free throws to close out the first quarter with a score of 19-16.

Huberty opened the second quarter with a pair of layups, and an and-one layup by freshman Lindsey Davis gave UIU a 23-21 lead. Davis would later knock down her first three pointer of the game at the five-minute mark, and Huberty added another three-pointer three possessions later. Sophomore Sydnee Nelson was fouled on the fastbreak, and she converted both of her free throw attempts to help give the Peacocks a 33-29 lead at the half.

Quincy opened the third with a pair of free throws, and they jumped back into the lead on a three pointer by Karsyn Stratton. The Peacocks responded with a 10-0 run that began with fifth year Kayla Bohr knocking down a two-point jumper, before Soler added another two pointer in the paint. Davis and Huberty followed that up by each converting shots from beyond the arc to give Upper Iowa a 46-36 lead. The Hawks ended the quarter by swishing two three pointers from the left corner in the final 50 seconds, and Upper Iowa entered the fourth with a 46-44 lead.

Huberty scored on a two-point jumper a minute into the fourth quarter, but the Hawks were able to thrive in the paint and take advantage of fast break opportunities, as they outscored the Peacocks 15-5 through the first seven minutes. With Quincy ahead by a score of 59-51, Huberty swished a two-point jumper and Soler added an and-one layup to cut the lead to three. Following a Quincy basket in the paint, Nelson swished a three pointer with 1:20 remaining. Soler then scored a layup to tie the game at 61 with 47 seconds remaining, which would send the game to overtime.

The Hawks scored five quick points to start the overtime period, before senior Helen Staley and Huberty each added two-point buckets. With the Peacocks down by three with one minute remaining, Nelson made a perfect pass to Davis who scored a clutch and one basket to tie the game at 70. Huberty closed out the first overtime by shooting 4-4 at the charity stripe, which tied the game at 74, to send the game into double OT.

Huberty's dominance continued as she opened double overtime with a three from the top of the key, before Soler added a pair of free throws. With the game tied at 80, Davis scored her third and-one basket of the game, and she knocked down the free throw to give the Peacocks a three-point lead. Following two Quincy free throws, the Peacocks found themselves up one point with less than a minute to play. Nelson received a pass from Soler far beyond the three-point line, and her clutch shot hit nothing but net as she pushed the Peacocks lead to four with 38 seconds remaining. With Quincy forced to foul, Nelson and Soler would each add free throws, securing the 88-84 win for the Peacocks.

Mia Huberty set a new career high as she scored 38 points on 15-29 shooting while going 4-8 from beyond the arc. She thrived on the defensive end as well as she recorded a team-high nine rebounds and blocked a shot. Huberty's 38-point performance ranks fourth in school history and it is the second most points scored for Upper Iowa at the Division two level in a single game.

Lindsey Davis added 16 points on 5-11 shooting, while knocking down 4-5 free throws.

Anna Soler scored 14 points and she drew six fouls which led to her shooting 8-11 from the charity stripe. She hauled in seven rebounds and recorded a team-high five assists.

Sydnee Nelson added nine points, three rebounds and two assists while shooting 2-3 from beyond the arc and 3-4 from the free throw line.

Helen Staley scored six points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and added a steal.

The Peacocks will hit the road for consecutive matches as they take on Missouri S&T on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and Lincoln on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m.
