Peacocks Achieve Commanding Victory over the Vikings

The Peacocks tipped off the season in dominating fashion as they overpowered the Augustana Vikings on the road by a score of 79-58.

Sophomore Ava Privet made an immediate impact in her first collegiate start, knocking down her first three of the game 25 seconds into the action. Senior Mia Huberty recorded three consecutive layups, and Privet added another three pointer to propel the Peacocks into an early 12-0 lead. Following consecutive baskets by Augustana, sophomore Sydnee Nelson and Huberty each scored on layups and fifth year Kayla Bohr made a two-point jumper. Huberty scored her tenth point of the quarter with a minute remaining and Bohr added a layup to give UIU a 26-14 lead at the end of the first.

Senior Anna Soler opened the second quarter by converting a layup and Ava Privet added her third three-point bucket to extend the Peacocks lead to 33-16. The Vikings were able to go on a 10-0 run to cut into UIU's lead, which ended on Huberty's seventh layup of the game. Senior Helen Staley scored UIU's final points of the half on a layup where the Peacocks entered the locker room with a 43-32 lead.

Huberty continued to thrive in the second half as she made a mid-range jump shot and added a three-pointer to open the quarter. Staley scored a layup on the very next possession, which extended the UIU lead to 50-32. Augustana was able to get to the line on a couple of possessions, where they successfully converted on their free throws to cut into the lead once again. They made a layup to make it a 54-44 game, but the Peacocks responded as Huberty added another layup and Privet swished her fourth three pointer of the game with 39 seconds remaining in the third.

Bohr recorded her first three-point bucket to start the fourth quarter, and she added a tip in to boost the Peacocks lead to 20 points by a score of 66-46. Junior Amelia Valentino hit a shot from beyond the arc and Privet converted on a two-point jump shot with three minutes remaining in the game. Soler and redshirt-sophomore Abbie Riederer each added late-game layups, as the Peacocks secured their first ever win over Augustana, by a final score of 79-58.
