Peacocks Achieve Comeback Victory against the Cardinals

Upper Iowa concluded their road trip by defeating the William Jewell Cardinals by the exact score of 3-2 for the second year in a row.

Jordan Goldstein continued to make her case for GLVC Freshman of the Year, by firing the first shot of the game into the back of the net just two minutes into the action. Sophomore Haylie Hutchinson and freshman Mikalyn Hidde assisted on the play as Goldstein scored her third goal of the season.

The Peacocks offense continued to thrive as junior Nevaeh James and Goldstein both added shots on target which were saved in the third and sixth minutes. William Jewell was able to tie the game in the tenth minute on a goal by Riley Frasure-Smith. The Peacocks responded with three more shots on target by Hidde, Goldstein and freshman Samantha Most which were all saved by WJC keeper Emily Glassman. Junior Isabelle Wagner recorded consecutive saves for UIU in the 36th and 38th minutes, but the Cardinals were able to take a 2-1 lead in the 39th on a goal from Dilyn Davies.

Upper Iowa would once again score just two minutes into the half, as Hutchinson opened the second period by scoring a goal on an assist from Goldstein and sophomore Maile Kehano, who each recorded their fourth assists on the year. Hutchinson continued to dominate in the second half, as she recorded another goal at the 53-minute mark with senior Darci Faichnie and sophomore Jessica Ancheta dishing out the assists.

Hutchinson's third goal on the season gave the Peacocks a 3-2 lead and she finished the day by recording two goals and one assist. This is the second time in her career that she contributed to three goals in a game as she previously recorded three assists last season in the Peacocks victory over Minnesota-Crookston.

Wagner recorded her third save of the day in the 56th minute, stopping a shot that was fired down the middle. Sophomore Giovanna Alexa Garcia recorded a shot on target in the 72nd minute, and senior Leah Buerck added a strike down the middle in the 79th which were both saved. The Peacocks defensive trio of freshman Kaydence Bonneau, junior Natalie Lima and Kehano each played all 90 minutes of action. They all played lockdown defense in the final 14 minutes of the game, as WJC was unable to attempt a shot as the Peacocks achieved a 3-2 victory.

UIU will look to add to their win streak when they return to Fayette for a double header weekend against Drury and Southwest Baptist. UIU takes on Drury on Friday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. and SBU on Sunday, Oct. 13 at noon.
