Greyhounds Ground Peacocks to Maintain First Place in GLVC

Upper Iowa football battled Indianapolis for the number-one spot in the GLVC standings on Saturday afternoon but could not complete the mission as they fell 40-13 to the Greyhounds. Indy collected 468 yards of offense on the day and held UIU to a season-low 194 total yards.

Indianapolis went 3-3 on fourth-down conversions, while Upper Iowa did not have an attempt. The visitors saw 23 first downs while the home team mustered ten.

Junior Eddy Latanauskas added two blocked kicks to his already nation-leading mark. His two XPT rejections versus the Greyhounds brought his total to seven for the season and the team to nine.

Indy quarterback Gavin Sukup threw five touchdowns for 227 yards (19-22) and added 65 yards rushing. Neither team scored in the opening frame, but Indianapolis came to life in the second stint and recorded three touchdowns for the 19-0 lead heading into halftime. Sukup pitched a 15-yarder to Anthony Crowell to pick up the team's first score of the game eight seconds into the second quarter. The following two touchdowns were under the four-minute mark: a short one-yard trot from Jon Lewis (13-0) and a short pass from Sukup to Ethan Hand (19-0) gave the Greyhounds the momentum heading into the intermission.

Indianapolis added seven more to their total in the early third quarter for the 26-0 advantage. Upper Iowa garnered its first touchdown with 6:36 remaining in the third on an 8-yard launch from Darryl Overstreet Jr. to Mante Morrow in the deep right corner across the goal line.

The Greyhounds added another seven on their next possession, fueled by a game-high 39-yard rush from Lewis. With 1st and 10 at the UIU21, Indianapolis strung together two passing plays and one running play that set them up at the 11-yard line. After a timeout to regroup, they returned to the field and executed an 11-yard toss into the end zone, extending their lead to 33-6.

Indy started the fourth with another touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Sukup to Alonzo Derrick for their final score of the game.

In the Peacocks' final possession of the game, a 27-yard reception from Overstreet to Master Brooks and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty set the team up at the IND 35. Several short passes later put Upper Iowa at the 2-yard line. RJ Wells attempted to clear the heap of defenders and nudge his way into the end zone, finally finding success on 3rd and 1, bringing the home team to a 40-13 deficit after the XPT from Nathan Behne.

Morrow led the offense with 53 yards receiving and a touchdown catch, while Wells had the team-high in rushing yards with 19 and a touchdown.

Michael Mulherin paced the Peacock defense with nine tackles, followed by Ben Kamara with seven. Shaquille Roman added the team's only sack for a loss of two yards.

Upper Iowa has a bye week next week but will return to action on Nov. 9 in Lebanon, Ill. against McKendree University.
