The Peacocks returned home for the first time in nearly, three weeks to face the Lewis Flyers and their perfect 6-0 GLVC record. Despite their best efforts, Upper Iowa lost a hard-fought battle by a score of 68-65.
The Peacocks jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with junior
Mia Huberty knocking down back-to-back free throws before converting on and and-one layup. Despite the Peacocks quickly getting to the foul line multiple times to start the game, that streak would quickly end as they would shoot only one free throw for the remainder of the game. The Flyers were able to rally back and take a 13-10 lead after converting two three pointers in a row. UIU was able to end the half on a 7-0, which was highlighted by a three pointer by sophomore
Amelia Valentino. The Peacocks were on fire to start the second half, as Huberty swished two more jumpers and senior
Kayla Bohr converted on mid-range shot and followed that up with a three pointer. Bohr was also a force on the glass, as she hauled in a game-high six rebounds throughout the first half. Upper Iowa was able to take a 26-15 lead before the Flyers picked up their intensity on the defensive end. Lewis drew five charges in the first half and scored 17 of their 27 points off turnovers. Lewis built on that momentum scoring 12-straight points, to take a one-point lead with a minute and a half remaining. UIU then made their next three shots, which included a buzzer beating midrange shot by Huberty to give the Peacocks a five-point lead at halftime. Huberty's buzzer beater closed out a second quarter which saw the Peacocks shoot a perfect 6-6 from two-point range. Huberty scored 16 of UIU's 32 first half points, shooting 6-7 from the floor and 1-1 from beyond the arc.
After scoring 27 points in the first half, the Flyers put together one of their best performances in a ten-minute span, matching those 27 points in just the third quarter. Lewis ended the half with a two-point jumper with one second remaining, which put the Peacocks in a 54-45 deficit. Senior
Cassidy Pagel and fifth-year
Brooke Evenson made consecutive layups to start the fourth quarter scoring, reducing Lewis' lead to three. The Flyers would respond with great mid-range and three-point shooting, taking a 65-55 lead. Facing a ten-point deficit, Evenson knocked down a three pointer with three minutes remaining and the Peacocks would follow this up a minute and a half later on a Huberty three-pointer. Huberty then scored on the Peacocks next possession, making it a 65-63 game with 54 seconds remaining. The Flyers converted on a layup on their next possession and UIU's missed three pointer put the Flyers at the line. The Peacocks were able to make a layup as time expired, but it would not matter as Lewis secured the 68-65 victory.
Mia Huberty led all scorers with 27 points, which is two shy of her season high. Huberty put up very efficient shooting splits (11-15 FG, 2-3 3PT) and added five rebounds.
Brooke Evenson finished with 14 points on 6-14 shooting, and led all Peacocks with two steals while also blocking a shot.
Kayla Bohr had a near double-double with nine points and seven rebounds, while shooting 4-7 from the floor.
UIU will be back on the road with games against Illinois-Springfield on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. and Quincy on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m.
