Upper Iowa has fallen to 6-5 as the Peacocks suffered a tough loss on the round against the Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars, by a score of 94-84.
This was the fifth time in UIU's last six games where the team exceeded the 80-point mark. Fifth-year
Katie Tornstrom scored her career-high 29 points on impressive shooting splits (9-19 FG, 4-7 3PT, 7-10 FT). Tornstrom also had a game-high ten rebounds, giving her four double-doubles on the year. Fifth-year
Brooke Evenson matched her career-high with 18 points on 6-9 shooting. She has continued to show why she is one of the best defenders in the GLVC as she blocked 3 shots and recorded two steals. Junior
Mia Huberty added 15 points on nearly perfect shooting (6-7 FG) while making all three of her free throws. Freshman
Sydnee Nelson had a great all-around performance off the bench scoring 7 points on 3-4 shooting, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
The Peacocks put together their best shooting performance of the season, making 55.3% of their shots (26-47). Tornstrom, Evenson, Nelson and freshman
Ava Privet were the only Peacocks to attempt a three pointer, but they combined to shoot 8-16 from beyond the arc, which is the second time this season that UIU made at least 50% of their three pointers.
While Upper Iowa shot incredibly well, the Prairie Stars were able to force 30 turnovers which was the difference maker in the game. As a team, Illinois Springfield recorded 20 steals, with nine coming from freshman Kayla Rice. They scored 40 points off turnovers and added 20 second chance points. The Peacocks were able to take a 47-43 lead at halftime, but the Prairie Stars responded with a great defensive effort in the third quarter, outscoring the Peacocks 33-12. While Upper Iowa put together a much better fourth quarter, outscoring UIS 25-18, it would ultimately not be enough as the buzzer sounded with a final score of 94-84.
UIU will look to get back to their winning ways as they travel to Quincy, Illinois to face the Quincy Hawks. The game will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m.
