Upper Iowa men's basketball collected their fourth consecutive win and second GLVC victory as they trumped McKendree on the road in a 97-83 decision. UIU improved to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Bearcats dropped to 8-4 (2-3 GLVC).
The Peacocks saw even scoring contributions across the board as all five starters were in double figures, and four of them netted 18 or more points.
Nick Reid led the charge with 21 points on 8-16 shooting and 4-9 from beyond the arc. His efforts were complemented by
Noah King with 19 points,
Jake Hilmer and
Kyle Hrncir with 18 and
Caleb Delzell with 11.
UIU concluded the first half on a 7-0 slide with buckets from Reid and Delzell, along with a pair of free throws from Hilmer to claim a 49-38 lead. UIU connected on nine three-pointers in the first half to help fuel their 11-point advantage, which was their largest lead of the game at that point.
The second half started off as a back-and-forth battle as McKendree netted six straight points to open the second stint, followed by Upper Iowa's 8-0 run, giving them a 57-44 lead.
The Peacocks held a 61-49 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game, but allowed the Bearcats to string together an 11-2 run to climb back within three points.
UIU was up by two with 4:11 remaining when a driving-and-one layup from King gave the team momentum in the closing minutes. He kick-started what would be a 15-2 run in the next three minutes.
Hilmer went 8-8 from the foul line in the last minute-and-a-half of the contest for a combined 10-10 for the game. He added nine assists and three steals.
Hrncir saw his career-high this evening as he went 7-8 from the field and recorded 18 points while pacing the team in rebounds with eight. Reid finished the game with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Delzell went 3-4 from long distance to aid in the team's 11 makes for the game.
The Peacocks found an advantage at the free throw line as they netted 18-24, while the Bearcats only attempted three free throws in the game, making two.
Upper Iowa is back on the hardwood on Saturday in Fayette as they host Lewis University at 3 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
