William Jewell's Three-Point Shooting Sinks the Peacocks

Upper Iowa has fallen to 8-7 with a 5-6 GLVC mark, following their roller coaster of a game on the road against the William Jewell Cardinals.

Katie Tornstrom started the game scoring Upper Iowa's first eight points, on back-to-back three pointers and a layup which made it an 8-9 game. Following a Mia Huberty layup, the Peacocks would be outscored by 12-points to end the first quarter as the Cardinals were able to capitalize on a couple offensive rebounds, while getting to the paint for five layups, which helped them jump out to an early 30-14 lead.

The Peacocks started the second quarter with a 10-3 run, which reduced their deficit to ten. Brooke Evenson scored eight early points to start the quarter, highlighted by an and-one layup. After William Jewell knocked down consecutive three-pointers, Kayla Bohr, Cassidy Pagel, and Huberty all made jump shots, which helped lead UIU to an 8-0 run. Tornstrom would score UIU's final bucket of the half, finishing with 12 points on 5-10 shooting. The Peacocks were able to cut into the Cardinals lead, ending the half down 47-38.

Huberty started the second half scoring for the Peacocks and Tornstrom scored her 14th point of the game on a layup. Shortly following that bucket, Tornstrom picked up her fourth foul of the game and was replaced by Amelia Valentino who immediately swished a three on her first shot of the half. Pagel added to UIU's scoring efforts with a layup and consecutive free throws, making it a four-point game. William Jewell would once again capitalize on an offensive rebound, as they made another three pointer. Bohr made another midrange jumper to make it a five-point game, but the Cardinals knocked down a corner three pointer, right before the buzzer to end the third quarter.

WJC continued to stay hot entering the fourth quarter, swishing multiple three's from the same spot which helped propel the Cardinals to an early 8-0 run. The Peacocks were not able to catch a break as Tornstrom appeared to convert a layup, but instead fouled out for the game as she was called for a charge. No matter how great of defense the Peacocks played, William Jewell continued to knock down shot after shot, making 14 three pointers to UIU's three, which helped them secure a 90-60 victory.

Katie Tornstrom led the scoring effort for the Peacocks, finishing with 14 points on 6-13 shooting. Mia Huberty had a very well-rounded game, scoring 12 points on 5-7 shooting, with five rebounds and a team-high three assists. Kayla Bohr rounded out the Peacocks double digit scorers, adding 11 points on a very efficient 5-6 shooting.

The Peacocks will travel to Kansas City, Mo. for a battle with the Rockhurst Hawks. The match will be held on Saturday, Jan 27 at 12 p.m. and it will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams.
