Peacocks Three-Point Shooting Secures Victory over Quincy

Upper Iowa has improved to 7-5 with a 4-4 GLVC mark, following their impressive road-victory against the Quincy Hawks.

The Peacocks were firing on all cylinders to start the game, as Brooke Evenson knocked down consecutive three pointers within the first minute of action. Katie Tornstrom's first bucket also came from the three-point line and a Mia Huberty midrange jumper would give the Peacocks an early 11-0 lead. Quincy was able to draw a lot of fouls which they were able to capitalize on at the free throw line, which helped reduce UIU's lead to 13-8. Upper Iowa would continue to shoot lights out from beyond the arc as Ava Privet and Huberty cashed back-to-back three pointers, extended the lead to 19-8. Tornstrom would knock down Upper Iowa's sixth three-pointer in the first quarter, which ended with the Peacocks up 24-14.

The Peacocks scored 16 points in the second quarter, with nine coming at the free throw line. Evenson shot 5-6 from the free throw line in the second quarter while Huberty and Kayla Bohr made both of their shots at the charity stripe. Quincy was able to score the final six points of the half, and UIU ended the half with a 40-34 lead. Huberty and Evenson led all scorers with 11 points each, while both players recorded two steals. Upper Iowa made 7-13 shots from three-point range (53.8%) and shot 9-10 from the free throw line (90.0%).

Alaina Brenning started the second half scoring, making a layup for her first two points of the game. UIU found themselves in foul trouble very early into the third quarter as Huberty and Evenson both picked up their third fouls. Quincy was able to force a couple turnovers through their press defense which they were able to capitalize on for two layups. Cassidy Pagel responded by scoring three buckets in a row for the Peacocks to help them maintain a 50-45 lead at the end of the third. She finished the quarter with six points on a perfect 3-3 shooting.

Pagel continued to dominate at the start of the fourth quarter, swishing a midrange shot from the right elbow. Following a Quincy two pointer, Tornstrom made consecutive three pointers (the second of which came off a Pagel offensive rebound) which extended the Peacocks lead to 58-51. While looking to make her fifth shot in a row, Pagel was fouled on a shot from the post, and made both of her free throws. Tornstrom then made another basket on a fadeaway two-pointer, giving her eight points in the quarter. Following a three-pointer and layup by Quincy, Huberty made a layup and a free throw to extended UIU's lead to double figures (69-59). A Katie Tornstrom steal with a minute remaining would secure the Peacocks victory, with a final score of 69-62. The Peacocks shot 42.9% from beyond the arc and made all but one free throw on 17 attempts.

Cassidy Pagel put together her best performance of the season, scoring a season-high 12 points on 5-6 shooting. She was no slouch on the defensive end either, grabbing six rebounds while adding a steal and a block.

Mia Huberty led all scorers with 18 points, while making all seven of her free throw attempts. She recorded three rebounds and three assists, and stole the ball two times.

Katie Tornstrom finished with 16 points, making 4 out of 7 three-point shots. She brought down seven rebounds all on the defensive end and recorded a game-high four steals.

Brooke Evenson recorded her fourth double-double on the year, scoring 11 points and securing a game-high ten rebounds. She added two steals for the third game in a row and recorded two blocks for the fourth time this season.
