Upper Iowa breezed to a 3-0 victory versus Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on their first day of the Quincy Hawks Invitational. The Peacocks handled the first two sets with ease, claiming a 25-16 triumph in both. The third set was a closer race, but UIU managed to pull off a 25-21 win, despite being all tied up at 20 apiece. They propelled to 3-2 on the season with two additional contests tomorrow to wrap up the tournament in Quincy, Ill. Edinboro fell to 2-4 on the year.
UIU was statistically better in all categories except for one. They edged out their opponent in kills (45-29), assists (42-29), digs (49-45) and aces (9-2) However, they did not get up for as many blocks, as the Fighting Scots recorded six in comparison to their four.
Individually,
Zoe Semelroth had a game-high of 16 kills, with
Emily Kono following closely behind with 12. Kono and
Jaden Francis both registered three service aces in the match.
Nicole Pozorski tallied 38 assists, while Kono recorded ten digs and
McKenna Diermeier added nine.
The Peacocks trailed the Fighting Scots early on in the first set. They entertained a back-and-forth scoring battle until they went on a 10-2 run to set them apart, bringing them from a 14-13 advantage to a convincing 24-15 lead, sealing the deal two plays later.
The second set came with a powerful start, as three kills from Kono helped fuel their 5-0 run to kick things off. UIU did not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the set, and in similar fashion to the opening stint, they defeated Edinboro 25-16.
The third and final go-around was a closer match, despite the Peacocks going on a 9-0 run to put them up 15-7. The Fighting Scots retaliated with an 8-2 slide of their own, chipping away to a two-point deficit (17-15). With the score all tied up at 21, Upper Iowa rallied off four-straight points, stemming from kills by Semelroth and
Kylee Oldenburger, while their opponents committed two attacking errors, sealing their fate and giving UIU their second sweep of the season.
Upper Iowa starts tomorrow with a face off against Newman University at 12 p.m. They take on the host team, Quincy University, later that day at 6 p.m.
