Following a commanding victory in their season opener Upper Iowa hasn't lost a step as they score five goals for the second straight game in their 5-1 victory against the St. Cloud State Huskies.
Sophomore midfielder
David Mateo Porras Rodriguez was all over the field the first 20 minutes of the game, as he was dribbling around defenders repeatedly, while attempting three shots which were unable to find the back of the net. Sophomore defender
Florian Deick scored his first career goal in a Peacocks uniform in the 20
th minute, as he tapped in a ricochet off a Huskies defender into the back of the net. The Peacocks would follow this up with a goal by freshman midfielder
Preston Price who would also score his first career goal off a ricochet in the 37
th minute.
St. Cloud State had a very good chance to answer in the 42
nd minute, but senior goalkeeper
Archie Watts made a sensational one-handed diving save. The Peacocks were just about to go into halftime with all the momentum in the world until disaster struck. Graduate student defender Vukota Mastilovic headed the ball off a beautiful cross into the back of the net with only 3 seconds remaining, reducing the Huskies deficit to 1-2 at the half.
It may have looked like St. Cloud State was getting ready to complete their comeback to start the second half, that is until
Frider Blunck decided he was going to be the best player in the world for the next 15 minutes. The junior forward scored just three minutes into the half and was assisted by Price who had just scored the previous goal. Five minutes later Blunck crossed a pass to Rodriguez who took one dribble and made a shot from the top of the box that went in the very top of the net. Only six minutes passed before Blunck was involved in his third goal of the game. He assisted on a goal from way outside the box by graduate forward
Thomas Walle, who must have yelled "top bins" as he launched his shot from downtown into the top left corner of the goal, giving the Peacocks a 5-1 lead.
While the Peacocks offense was the highlight of the evening, plenty of props need to go to their defense as well. Alongside Deick, freshman
Tura Dalu, sophomore
Dexter Garrett, and graduate student
Daigo Adachi have been incredible on the defensive side as they were making plenty of steals, forcing bad shots, and simply outhustling St. Cloud State throughout the game. Both Dalu and Garrett have played all 90 minutes in both games and this streak will likely continue.
UIU has now improved to 2-0 on the season, which matches their entire win total from last year. Blunck and Walle have both scored in back-to-back games, Rodriguez, Adachi and Blunck have two assists on the season, Watts has saved eight out of ten shots, and the Peacocks have played exceptionally well as a team. Upper Iowa will look to improve their win streak as they host Mount Mercy on Sunday, Sep. 10 at 1 p.m.
