Volleyball Finesses Friday Night Win Over Alaska Fairbanks

Upper Iowa volleyball had a successful second day of the Seawolf Invitational as they swept Alaska Fairbanks 3-0. Regardless of the three-set victory, the Peacocks had to produce clutch plays to claim their victory as the final scores of all three frames were only decided by two points: 25-23, 27-25 and 25-23. UIU improves to 2-1 on the season while their opponent dropped to 1-6 overall.

Emily Kono was at the top of the list for kills with ten. The team accumulated 44 slams in tonight's contest.

Nicole Pizorski had a productive day on the court as she was prevalent in several different categories. She led the team in assists (37) and digs (17), while also recording seven kills.

The first set was a back and forth battle until the end was near, as UIU gained their largest margin of five points (23-18) after a three-point slide fueled by a Martha Pace kill, service error from the opposing team and an ace from McKenna Diermeier

The Nanooks responded with three straight points of their own, but the Peacocks were able to lock in and seal the first set.

In the second stint, Upper Iowa found themselves down 12-6 and were forced to rally back after Alaska Anchorage went on a six-point run. The Peacocks eventually found their footing and were able to tie things up at 17 apiece, and from then on battled back and forth until they scored three straight points at the end to outdo the Nanooks 27-25.

UIU found stride in the third set after an eight-point slide to put themselves ahead 18-12. AAU went on several short scoring snippets, but ultimately could not combat the pace of the Peacocks.

The Peacocks tallied eight service aces in the match, while the Nanooks registered four.

Tomorrow marks Upper Iowa's last day in Anchorage, Alaska. They take on familiar foe St. Cloud State University, a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
