Mustangs Rally for 3-2 Win and Series Sweep

The Peacock baseball team got a dominant performance from freshman pitcher Kyle Hrncir and carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning against Southwest Minnesota State University. Unfortunately, the Mustangs earned a win in their final at bats for the second time in three games at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. The 3-2 walk off win for SMSU improved the record to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in the NSIC, while UIU dropped to 10-13 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Hrncir was electric on the mound for the Peacocks holding the Mustangs scoreless for seven innings while allowing one hit and four walks while striking out three batters. The Peacock freshman lowered his ERA to 4.74. Hrncir has allowed just two runs over his last 17.2 innings on the mound with 16 strikeouts.

Upper Iowa scored the game's first run in the second inning when JJ Vargas hit his sixth home run on the season over the wall in left centerfield. The Peacocks looked for more in the inning and put runners on the corners with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat.

UIU loaded the bases in the third inning with two outs, but a strikeout once again closed down the Peacock half of the inning and stranded three baserunners. That total climbed to eight left on base after the fourth inning when the Peacocks packed the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a flyout to center left UIU clinging to their 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Victor Plaz singled for the second time and moved to third after a wild pitch and a ball four to Vargas that got away and put runners on the corners with no outs. Samuel Grushkin stepped up and executed a safety squeeze to plate Plaz and move Vargas to second, but a flyout and groundout kept the Peacocks from a big inning.

UIU's last chance to add to their 2-0 lead came in the top of the eighth inning when Brock Zimmer reached on a swinging bunt and went to second base on an overthrow to open the frame. Zimmer moved to third on a sac bunt from Caden White, but an infield pop up and a routine fly to center didn't let Zimmer come home.

Austin Shingledecker took over on the mound in the eighth inning for UIU and worked through the inning quickly thanks to an inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play to keep UIU ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Mustangs got a leadoff walk by Isaac Nett, who moved to second when Owen Latendresse singled to center. Max Kalenberg drove in the first run with a ground ball that went against the Peacock defensive shift and allowed Nett to score and Latendresse to move to third. A walk then loaded the bases for SMSU and caused a pitching change. Sam Marhefke came into the game with no outs and the bases loaded. Keenan Wenzel drove in the tying run which the Peacocks traded for an out at third base. Peyton Nash then came to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered with a single to right center allowing Jake Tauer to score the winning run.

Shingledecker (2-2) took the loss with 1.0 inning of work allowing the three runs on three hits and two walks.

Shay Endres (2-2) grabbed the win in relief with 4.0 innings of work allowing just one hit in his time on the mound.

The Peacocks will remain at home, although they will still be the visitors, on Tuesday when they welcome the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston for a double header. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Crookston, Minn. First pitch for the NSIC double header is set for 10 a.m. as the teams try to avoid weather predicted for Tuesday.
