Upper Iowa softball earned their second conference sweep of the season as they defeated Northern State with scores of 6-3 and 5-4. The Peacocks held a steady lead throughout game one, but found themselves crawling back in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two. Upper Iowa was scoreless until the bottom of the inning when they scored four runs to tie up the game and send it into extra innings, where
Serah Shafer popped a walk off to center field to seal the sweep over the Wolves.
With the two wins, the Peacocks improved to 17-26 on the season and 9-16 in the NSIC, while their opponents fell to 14-32 on the year and 8-18 in the conference.Â
Laila Pelds and
Taylor Sedam pioneered their squad at the plate in game one with three hits apiece. The team totaled 12 hits while the Wolves recorded nine.
Delaney Vetter (7-9)Â picked up the win in the circle as she pitched the full seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five batters.Â
Upper Iowa executed their offense right away in the first inning as they recorded three hits.
Kylie Doty ripped one up the middle and brought in UIU's first run of the day. The Peacocks scored again in the third inning and took the 2-0 lead after Doty smacked a ball to center field and brought in Pelds.
The batting order made it all the way back to Pelds in the bottom of the fourth, giving her the opportunity to bomb the ball over the left field fence for her fifth home run of the season. The Wolves were able to respond in the fifth inning as they hit a home run of their own, scoring two runs and cutting the deficit to 3-2.Â
The sixth inning was pivotal for the Peacocks as they scored an additional three runs. Doty,
Rae VanMilligan and
Sadie Carpenter each picked up RBI's in this inning as they knocked in the team's three runs.
The Wolves were down 6-2 going into the seventh inning. They were able to score one more run to cut the advantage to 6-3, but were unable to chip deeper into the lead as they suffered their first loss of the day.
Game two remained scoreless for both teams until the fifth inning. The Wolves made it around the bases on an overthrow to third base. They took advantage again in the inning after scoring on a past ball, commanding the 2-0 lead. Northern State scored an additional two runs in the top of the seventh, taking the 4-0 advantage going into the bottom of the inning.
Upper Iowa came to life, getting on base any way they could. They reached on error, walked and totaled several hits. Pelds drew a walk that scored their first run of the game. With one out,
Taylor Sedam cracked a ball to center field and brought a runner home for their second run of the day. NSU's outfielder picked up an error as she tried to throw it into the infield, which allowed another UIU run to score. As the Peacocks were now down 4-3, Doty singled to center field and scored the tying run, sending the game into extra innings.
Northern State could not bring anyone around in the top of the eighth, giving Upper Iowa the opportunity to take game two and earn a sweep on the day.Â
VanMilligan reached base on an error and ended up being the winning run.
Serah Shafer came up to the plate and cracked a ball over the center fielder's head, bringing home VanMilligan and sending Upper Iowa to their second victory of the day.
Abby Buckman was on the mound for the Peacocks in game two. She threw eight innings and allowed four runs on ten hits.
