Upper Iowa softball continued their non-conference schedule as they traveled to Kirksville, Mo. for a double-header versus Truman State University. The Peacocks picked up a split on the day, falling to the Bulldogs 9-1 in the first game and then coming back to win the second contest 10-3. Upper Iowa is now 8-10 on the season and Truman State holds a 9-19 mark for the year.
Upper Iowa is scheduled to host Winona State University in Fayette for a double-header in their conference opener on Tuesday, March 28 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Upper Iowa faces two additional NSIC teams that week as they travel to Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, April 1 and Sioux Falls on Sunday, April 2.Â
Truman State-9, Upper Iowa-1
The Peacocks were first to score in the first inning after Laila Pelds homered with two outs, but the squad was unable to put any more runs on the board as the game ended 9-1 in the fifth inning. UIU had a total of three hits in the contest. In addition to Pelds' homerun, Serah Shafer singled in the third inning and Ari Charles hit one in the fifth inning.
Truman scored two runs of their own in the first inning and gradually built up their momentum.Â
They scored an additional run in the second inning and then smacked back to back homeruns in the fourth, bringing in six more runs and propelling them to a 9-1 advantage over Upper Iowa.
Deleney Vetter (2-4) represented the Peacocks on the mound for all four innings. She allowed 13 hits on nine runs, walking two batters.Â
TSU's Zimmer (4-6) picked up the win in the circle as she threw five innings in total, allowing just three hits and one run, walking one batter.
Upper Iowa-10, Truman State-3
Upper Iowa put their rally caps on as they came to life in their second game of the afternoon and sealed a 10-3 win over Truman State. UIU gathered 13 hits in the second game. Charles, Pelds, Church and
Kylie Doty each collected multiple hits at the plate.
The Bulldogs scored first as they put one up on the board right off the bat in the first inning. The Peacocks were able to retaliate in the third inning as they put five runs on the board. Big components of the inning were Charles hitting a triple and scoring two, along with
Rae VanMilligan smacking a double, bringing around two. UIU held a 5-1 lead after the third.Â
After errors from the Bulldog defense, the Peacocks took advantage and made their way on base to eventually score another two runs in the fifth inning. They added another in the sixth inning for the 8-1 lead before Truman State brought one around in the bottom of the sixth to bring them within six.
The Peacocks hit two doubles in the seventh inning to help push out their lead even further. Doty and
Taylor Sedam each cracked one over the right fielder's head, earning them two bases and each collecting an RBI as they sent one runner home. The Bulldogs solo homered in the seventh inning, but it was not enough to catch UIU and keep up with their offensive output.
Abby Buckman (4-1) was in the circle for the Peacocks. She surrendered three runs on three hits over seven innings, striking out five.Â
