Upper Iowa women's tennis endured a 6-1 loss to Minnesota Crookston in their final duel of the weekend at the Winona Tennis Center. The Peacocks fell to 0-3 (0-3 NSIC) on the season while Minnesota Crookston improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC.
The teams started the day with the doubles competition as UMC edged out Upper Iowa to pick up the point.Â
Rafaela Queiroga Tavares and Johanne Valle fell to Kavya Singh and Blaike Zander in the No. 1 slot in a 7-6 decision. At the No. 2 slot,
Elaina Wall and
Varvara Ogorodnikova picked up a 6-4 win over Madeleine Schneider and Sarah Velasquez. At No. 3 doubles, Kaydance Hinn and Tasha Achermann won by default.
In the singles matches, Ogorodnikova grabbed UIU's only win of the day over Madeleine Schneider in a 6-4, 7-5 decision. She handed Schneider her first loss of the season. Ogorodnikova was perfect over the weekend, winning both doubles and singles matches on Saturday and Sunday.Â
In the No. 2 slot, Queiroga Tavares dropped to Zander 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. At the No. 3 spot, Valle fell to Singh, 6-3, 7-6. At No. 4 singles, Wall was defeated by Michelle Swyter 6-4, 6-1. At the No. 5 slot,
Katie O'Brien was trumped by Velasquez 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 6 spot, UMC's Ashley Chomyn won by default.
The Peacocks take a break from the action next weekend as they continue to prepare for non-conference foes, Grinnell College and Truman State. They take on the Pioneers on Sunday, Mar. 5 at 3 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa and compete against Truman State the next day at 2 p.m. in Kirksville, Mo.Â
